  1. 1. Tailoring residue-derived carbon materials for the removal of wastewater contaminants : adsorption and surface properties

    Författare :Mirva Niinipuu; Stina Jansson; Jean-Francois Boily; Erik Rosenbaum; Magnus Bergknut; Capucine Dupont; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Adsorption; hydrochar; HTC; chemical activation; wastewater; pharmaceuticals; metals; surface properties; biobased residues;

    Sammanfattning : The availability of effective, low-cost wastewater treatment is necessary for increased water recycling and the prevention of environmental pollution on a global scale. Adsorption on activated carbons is commonly applied in wastewater treatment, but the high cost of conventional activated carbons limits the use of this technique. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Modeling adsorption of organic compounds on activated carbon : a multivariate approach

    Författare :Jufang Wu; Anders Cedergren; Ingrid Fängmark; Ola Claesson; Lars-Gunnar Hammarström; Fritz Stoeckli; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Analytical chemistry; activated carbon; adsorption; adsorption capacity; adsorption rate; PCA; PLS; binary mixtures; Dubinin-Radushkevich; Wheeler-Jonas; Analytisk kemi; Analytical chemistry; Analytisk kemi; analytisk kemi; Analytical Chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Activated carbon is an adsorbent that is commonly used for removing organic contaminants from air due to its abundant pores and large internal surface area. This thesis is concerned with the static adsorption capacity and adsorption kinetics for single and binary organic compounds on different types of activated carbon. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Insights into Materials Properties from Ab Initio Theory : Diffusion, Adsorption, Catalysis & Structure

    Författare :Andreas Blomqvist; Rajeev Ahuja; Christopher Wolverton; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Density functional theory; Molecular dynamics; Diffusion; Catalysis; Adsorption; Random structure search; Hydrogen-storage materials; Phase-change materials; Defects and diffusion; Defekter och diffusion; Surfaces and interfaces; Ytor och mellanytor; Physics with spec. in Atomic; Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics; Fysik med inriktning mot atom- molekyl- och kondenserande materiens fysik;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and DFT based ab initio molecular dynamics simulations have been employed in order to gain insights into materials properties like diffusion, adsorption, catalysis, and structure. In transition metals, absorbed hydrogen atoms self-trap due to localization of metal d-electrons. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Polyelectrolyte complexes of bottle brush copolymers : Solution and adsorption properties

    Författare :Shovsky Alexander; Per M. Claesson; Tommy Nylander; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis work was to systematically investigate the physico-chemical properties of polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) formed by bottle brush and linear polyelectrolytes in solution and at solid / liquid interfaces. Electrostatic self-assembly of oppositely charged macromolecules in aqueous solution is a versatile strategy to construction of functional nanostructures with easily controlled properties. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Unsaturated Fatty Acids in Alkane Solution : Adsorption and Tribological Properties

    Författare :Sarah M. Lundgren; Per M. Claesson; Hugh Spikes; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Fatty acids and blends of fatty acids are used as friction modifiers and anti-wear additives in diesel fuels. A large part of some fatty acid blends are unsaturated fatty acids. Even though fatty acids have been thoroughly investigated, the adsorption and tribological behaviour of unsaturated fatty acids are no fully understood. LÄS MER
