  1. 11. Uveal melanoma and macular degeneration : molecular biology and potential therapeutic applications

    Författare :Mario A Economou; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Uveal melanoma; exudative AMD; IGF-1R; c-Met; prognostic markers; metastasis; oral treatment; VEGF;

    Sammanfattning : Uveal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular malignant tumor in adults with 30% to 50% of patients that ultimately succumb to metastatic disease, mainly to the liver. Although new diagnostic and therapeutic tools have been developed during the most recent years, only the eye conservation rate has been achieved, while the survival rate remains poor. LÄS MER

  2. 12. On the Causal Mechanisms of Stuttering

    Författare :Per A Alm; Lund Neurologi; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; stuttering; neurofysiologi; neuropsykologi; neurophysiology; Neurologi; dystonia; neuropsychology; Neurology; basal ganglia;

    Sammanfattning : Stuttering is one of the most common speech disorders. However, the etiology is poorly understood, and is likely to be heterogeneous. The aim of this thesis was to clarify causal mechanisms, focusing the brain. LÄS MER

  3. 13. The role of adjuvant-induced innate immune activation in shaping vaccine responses

    Författare :Elizabeth A Thompson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Adjuvants are components added to non-live vaccine formulations to enhance the effect of the vaccine by alerting the immune system to initiate a response against the vaccine. Powerful new adjuvants will be critical for the development of next generation vaccines to diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV-1/AIDS, malaria, and therapeutic cancer vaccines. LÄS MER

  4. 14. The ontogeny and regulation of human natural killer cells

    Författare :Martin A Ivarsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Natural Killer (NK) cells are members of the innate lymphoid cell (ILC) family and take part in the detection and eradication of virus-infected and transformed cells. In this thesis, together with my colleagues I have investigated how NK cells and other ILCs develop and function during human fetal development, how NK cells are functionally regulated (educated) via the activating receptor KIR2DS1, and how NK cells in our body are affected during the early phase of an acute viral infection. 5. 15. The impact of the cytoskeleton dynamics on immune responses

    Författare :Marisa A P Baptista; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Immune cells are susceptible to a variety of external stimuli that triggers cell surface receptors, leading to activation of intracellular proteins and changes in the actin cytoskeleton. The Rho-GTPases are a family of proteins that regulate several aspects of actin polymerization. LÄS MER
