1. Serotonergic receptor subtypes in learning and memory : focus on 5-HT1A, 5-HT1B and 5-HT2A receptors
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to study how serotonin (5-HT) receptor subtypes can influence hippocampus/amygdala-dependent teaming and memory using the water maze (WM) and the passive avoidance (PA) tasks in rodents, and to provide a cellular correlate to the behavioral results using histochemical methods. Glutamatergic neurons in the trisynaptic circuit of the hippocampus are believed to be important for spatial teaming and memory as well as synaptic plasticity. LÄS MER
2. Experimental studies on the sources, pathways and targets for volume transmission in the rat brain
Sammanfattning : Volume transmission has been defined as the three-dimensional diffusion or convection of transmitters in the extracellular space (ECS) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) over a larger distance than the synaptic cleft. The regional localization of dopamine (DA) nerve terminals and dopamine Dl and D2 receptors in nucleus accumbens were studied in detail using double immuno-labelling. LÄS MER
3. Clinical molecular imaging of schizophrenia
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to examine pathophysiology and antipsychotic treatment of schizophrenia by using positron emission tomography (PET). The high affinity radioligand [11C]FLB 457 was used for determination of dopamine D2 receptor binding in the thalamus and the cortex of nine drug-naïve patients with schizophrenia and eight control subjects. 4. PET studies of the serotonin transporter in the human brain
Sammanfattning : The serotonin (5-HT) system attracts considerable attention in research on the pathophysiology and drug treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders. The brain imaging technique Positron Emission Tomography (PET) allows for examination of neurotransmission systems in the human brain in vivo. LÄS MER
5. Cytokine induced airway hyperreactivity characterized in an in-vitro model of asthma
Sammanfattning : Asthma is a chronic disorder of the lower airways, characterized by inflammation and hyperreactivity. Pro-inflammatory cytokines like tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) are known to play important roles in the pathogenesis, but our knowledge how these cytokines contribute to the development of airway hyperreactivity is limited.
