11. Neurochemical regulators of the septohippocampal pathway : role in spatial and aversive learning
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the significance of major neurotransmitters in the septohippocampal pathway for hippocampal-dependent learning and memory. The cholinergic and GABAergic neurons in the medial septal/vertical limb of the diagonal band of Broca area (MS/vDB) projecting to the hippocampus, constitute the septohippocampal pathway, which has been implicated in a number of important functions such as attention, anxietylike behavior and hippocampal-dependent learning and memory. 12. Galanin receptor subtypes in rodent models of mood disorders
Sammanfattning : Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a serious mental illness, with a complex etiology. It is a multifactorial disorder caused by a combination of genetic, environmental and epigenetic factors. Exposure to stressful life events seems to be a common, contributing cause of morbidity. 13. Serotonergic aporphine derivatives : Synthesis and structure-activity relationships
Sammanfattning : Novel series of well-characterized and stereochemically pure 11-substituted (R)-aporphine derivatives have been prepared and their interaction with serotonin 5-HT7 and 5-HT1A receptors and dopamine D2A and D1 receptors have been studied. Efficient palladium catalyzed reactions were utilized for the diastereoselective synthesis of atropisomers as well as for the synthesis of several of the other (R)-aporphine derivatives. LÄS MER
14. The role of the serotonergic system and the effects of antidepressants during brain development examined using in vivo PET imaging and in vitro receptor binding
Sammanfattning : Serotonin (5-HT) and the serotonergic system, which includes the serotonin transporter (SERT) and the two G protein-coupled 5-HT1A and 5-HT1B receptors, are implicated in the pathophysiology and treatment of several neuropsychiatric disorders including major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety. Two classes of antidepressants—selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which block SERT, and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), which block several monoamine transporters—alter 5-HT levels and modulate the serotonergic system. 15. Interactions between the opioid and serotonin systems in chronic pain : quantitative live cell study by fluorescence cross-correlation spectroscopy (FCCS)
Sammanfattning : Chronic pain is a major health issue worldwide. It enacts considerable suffering on the affected individuals and significantly increases the societal burden, as it is the most common reason why individuals seek sick leave and ask for medical help. LÄS MER
