1. Carbenes: The Gathering : Photophysics of Transition Metal Carbene Complexes
Sammanfattning : This thesis explores the photophysics of some transition-metal complexes (TMCs) which utilize N-heterocyclic carbenes as ligands. After a historical interlude which traces the development of the broader field of transition metal complexes and their photophysical investigations, there is an overview of theoretical concepts and the spectroscopic methods employed. 2. Investigations of Transition Metal Systems : Angle-Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy at Low and High Energy
Sammanfattning : The work presented in this thesis aims at achieving an increased understanding of the electronic structure of materials whose properties are to a large extent governed by transition metals. All studies are based on data from angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) employed on the valence band of the studied systems. LÄS MER
3. Magnetic ordering and crystal structure in selected transition- metal compounds
Sammanfattning : Applications of magnetic materials are inherently related to their crystal, magnetic and electronic structures. In this thesis, experimental and theoretical methods have been focused on magnetic bulk materials from novel chemical synthesis, to X-ray diffraction for initial phase characterisation, and crystal and magnetic structure studies to explain their complex magnetic properties. 4. Magnetism and Structure of Thin 3d Transition Metal Films : XMCD and EXAFS using Polarized Soft X-Rays
Sammanfattning : In this Thesis the magnetic and structural properties of thin epitaxial Fe, Co, and Ni films are discussed. Some of the in-situ prepared samples were used to characterize the degree of circular polarization of the newly installed beamline D1011 at MAX-lab. LÄS MER
5. Electronic structure investigations of transition metal complexes through X-ray spectroscopy
Sammanfattning : Catalysts based on the first-row (3d) transition metals are commonly seen in chemical and biological reactions. To understand the role of the transition metal in the catalyst, the element specific technique core level spectroscopy is used to probe the electronic structure and geometric properties centered around the metal site.
