  1. 6. Studies on 7a-hydroxycholesterol in extrahepatic tissues and cells

    Författare :Jie Zhang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : In human liver, primary bile acids are synthesized from cholesterol via the well-established neutral and also via the recently described acidic pathways. The latter includes 27-hydroxycholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Studies on a novel oxidative mechanism for elimination of extrahepatic cellular cholesterol

    Författare :Amir H M Babiker; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Recently, a new oxidative mechanism for elimination of cholesterol from extrahepatic cells by sterol 27-hydroxylase was described. This mechanism involves conversion of cholesterol into 27-hydroxycholesterol and cholestenoic acid. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Steroids and steroid-metabolizing enzymes in the nervous system : Special focus on cell survival and sex hormone synthesis

    Författare :Ida Emanuelsson; Maria Norlin; Kjell Wikvall; Lena Ekström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Some steroids in the brain and peripheral nervous system have been shown to have neuroprotective effects but the knowledge is limited. The present study examines the effects of steroids including oxysterols, vitamin D and vitamin D analogs on cell viability/growth and steroidogenesis in the nervous system. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Cell death in atherosclerosis

    Författare :Milita Crisby; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :atherosclerosis; carotid artery stenosis; ischemic stroke; apoptosis; necrosis; lipid peroxidation; plaque stability; pravastatin; inflammation; 27-[alpha]-hydroxylase;

    Sammanfattning : Rupture of atherosclerotic lesions is recognized as the major cause of acute cerebrovascular and coronary syndromes. The characteristics of the typical vulnerable plaque include increased inflammatory cells at the shoulder region, a large lipid core, a thin fibrous cap with few collagen fibers and smooth muscle cells. 5. 10. Use of primary human hepatocytes for the elucidation of bile acid synthesis

    Författare :Ewa C S Ellis; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : In the present investigation we cultured primary human hepatocytes on matrigel under serum-free conditions and studied bile acid formation. The following observations were made: · The major steroid products excreted from primary human hepatocytes into the culture medium were cholic acid, CA (70%) and chenodeoxycholic acid, CDCA (25%) conjugated with glycine or taurine.
