    Sammanfattning : The subject of this thesis is Scandinavian nationalism from the late 18th century to ca 1920. The focus lies on that particular aspect of nationalism that was at the same time the most mundane and the most enigmatic: the ever-present depicting of the nation in words, pictures and music, which in effect created a parallel universe, a patriotic dreamland.     Sammanfattning : The Swedish natural philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg (1688–1772) thought in his early scientific career that the world was like a gigantic machine, following the laws of mechanics and geometry. The work presented here is a study of his mechanistic worldview and metaphorical way of thinking up to the year 1734, examining most of his fields of interest, from geometry and metaphysics to technology and mining engineering.     Sammanfattning : This thesis is to be understood as an analysis in which the first-night opera repertoires at four European court-theatres are discussed and compared during a period of approximately twenty years (from 1771 to 1792) corresponding to the rule of Gustav III of Sweden.The study focuses on Christoph Willibald Gluck's reform-operas Orfeo ed Euridice, Alceste, Iphigénie en Aulide, Iphigénie en Tauride and Armide, the same five Gluck-operas which after Gustav III had had them introduced at his newly-founded Royal Opera came to constitute an essential part of the Gustavian Opera's repertoire.     Sammanfattning : The primary aim of this dissertation is to study the nationalistic worldview as it emerged in the German lands in the second half of the eighteenth century . The research focuses on how this influenced the artistic practices of Prussian composer, writer and court Kapellmeister Johann Friedrich Reichardt (1752–1814), and likewise how Reichardt’s activities influenced and formed this field.
