  1. 1. Disturbed Islet Function and Alterations in Islet Protein Expression

    Författare :Henrik Ortsäter; Peter Bergsten; Franz Schuit; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cell biology; islet; glucose; oleate; corticosterone; oxygen tension; insulin release; protein profiling; Clark-like electrodes; SELDI-TOF MS; PPI-B; 11β-HSD1; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Pancreatic β-cells sense the concentration of glucose in the systemic circulation through metabolism of the sugar molecule. Failure to correlate the blood sugar concentration to an appropriate metabolic signal disrupts the function of the β-cell as a controller of glucose homeostasis and may contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. 2. 2. Adipose tissue as an active organ : blood flow regulation and tissue-specific glucocorticoid metabolism

    Författare :Jonas Andersson; Tommy Olsson; Stefan Söderberg; Sverker Jern; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1; adipose tissue; autonomic nervous system; blood flow; cortisol; nitric oxide; weight loss.; medicin; Medicine;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Despite advances in the treatment of atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. With the population getting older and more obese, the burden of cardiovascular disease may further increase. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Molecular regulators of glucose and lipid metabolism in skeletal muscle

    Författare :Sameer S Kulkarni; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Skeletal muscle is a primary site of insulin action and insulin-stimulated glucose transport and occupies a center stage in maintaining whole body glucose and lipid homeostasis. Another key feature of a healthy skeletal muscle is its ability to switch between utilization of lipids and glucose as fuel in response to feeding or fasting respectively. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Studies on Labisia pumila var. alata extract with phytoestrogenic effects : impact on biological activities and gene expression

    Författare :Fazliana Mansor; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Labisia pumila;

    Sammanfattning : In Malaysia, Labisia pumila var. alata (LPva) has been used by women for generations. Traditionally, the plant is boiled, either alone or in decoction with other herbs. It is claimed to have health benefits such as to contract the uterus after childbirth, allay painful menstruation and irregular periods and to generally alleviate fatigue. LÄS MER
