1. Transglycosylation by Glycoside Hydrolases - Production and modification of alkyl glycosides
Sammanfattning : To enable the transition to a green, bio-based economy, an extensive enzymatic toolbox competitive to traditional chemical procedures is needed. One strong area for enzymes is carbohydrate chemistry, due to the over-functionalized nature of carbohydrates, difficult to handle in traditional chemistry. LÄS MER
2. Structure and functional studies of plant cell wall degrading enzymes : glycoside hydrolase family 3 β-glucosidases and lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases
Sammanfattning : Presently, plant biomass is considered as one of the major future renewable sources for the production of second-generation biofuels. While the first generation biofuels essentially are based on starch and sucrose rich feed stocks and which production may compete with food production, the second-generation biofuels may be based on lignocellulose as feedstock, which is less problematic from an ethical point of view. 3. Molecular development of a thermostable β-glucosidase for modification of natural products
Sammanfattning : The gene encoding a β-glucosidase originating from the extreme thermophile Thermotoga neopolitana has been cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. The aim was to produce a thermostable enzyme that could be used to remove sugar residues from glucosylated natural products classified as flavonoids by applying a method combining extraction in hot pressurized water with enzymatic hydrolysis. 4. Thermostable glycosidases and glycosynthases as biocatalysts in green chemistry applications
Sammanfattning : The constant need to develop environmental friendly processes using renewable raw materials and to reduce harmful waste production motivates the present investigation focusing on biocatalyst development for enzymatic synthesis, a biotechnological approach in the field of green chemistry. At first, structural functional experiments were made for a β-glucosidase from T. LÄS MER
5. SOUnd-DRIven BIOtechnology
Sammanfattning : Ultrasound has been vastly applied in different areas such as medical imaging and the food industry, but not much attempt has been made to investigate its influence on microorganisms and its potential to be applied in microbial biotechnology. Previous studies show the potential of acoustic waves to increase biomass yield, production of secondary metabolites and enhanced enzyme-catalyzed reactions, probably due to improved mass transfer and cell retention.
