Sammanfattning: This thesis investigates whether learning materials in the form of computer games can increase knowledge and comprehension in the area of ICT security.Through a series of experiments carried out in Sweden between the years 2000 and 2003, investigating theoretical knowledge as well as practical knowledge gained through a single-user computer game, data were collected and subjected to quantitative and qualitative analyses. In the evaluation of the theoretical knowledge acquired, learning preferences and teaching methods were matched and compared with acquired understanding of issues related to ICT security. A framework for Game-Based Instruction and Design, grounded in existing learning theories is presented and discussed. Based on this framework an applicable teaching method that is a computer game to increase awareness and understanding of issues related to ICT security was developed and evaluated. During the evaluation of the practical knowledge acquired, a model for Vital Security Functions was created that allows for comparison of security usage between high-level security applications. Different visualisation techniques of the data collected through the model for Vital Security Functions are also presented and discussed.
