Postillor och predikan : en medeltida texttradition i filologisk och funktionell belysning
Sammanfattning: The subject of this dissertation is the textual tradition of a sermon collection in Old Swedish, which 1 call the ß postil. The extant manuscripts have so far not been thoroughly investigated from a philological view-point besides the editions. The dissertation focuses on several issues: to provide such a philological description of the material, to make account for the sources of the textual tradition as well as for the provenance of the now lost archetype, to study the purpose and use of both the lost archetype and the extant manuscripts. The textual tradition as a whole in relation to its sources as well as changes within the textual tradition are instants of how the continental theology is transformed into popular edification directed to a lay public. The philological theory of textual transmission is here complemented by a theory of textual transformation, the key-word of which is popularization. A crucial role in this process is played by Vadstena abbey. It was probably here that the lost archetype was written. It is also shown that the liturgically arranged vernacular postil in the same process develops from the often more disparate Latin sermon collection of preferably mendicant origin. The question of use takes its point of departure in a brief examination of Swedish mediaeval preaching. During the 15th century the demands for a regular preaching on Sundays and major feasts are increasing. The development of the genre in combination with inner criteria (contents, formulae) suggests that these texts are directly or indirectly related to the mediaeval preaching activity.
