Jóns saga helga i AM 234 fol. och AM 221 fol. Diplomatariska utgåvor med paleografisk och ortografisk kommentar

Detta är en avhandling från Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

Sammanfattning: The medieval Icelandic manuscript AM 234 fol. contains i.a. a version of Jóns saga helga. The major part of the older fragment AM 221 fol. consists of parts of the same saga and is thought to be the exemplar of AM 234. Diplomatic editions of the two manuscripts have been prepared in the dissertation. Palaeography and orthography of Jóns saga in AM 234 are investigated with comparisons with AM 221. The two scribes of AM 234 are compared to each other. The palaeographical and orthographical comparison between the two manuscripts reveals primarily chronological differences, but also that scribe B in AM 234 is more dependent on the exemplar than scribe A. AM 234 and AM 221 differ as concerns the shape of the miniscule <a>. The graph <v> is used for v-sound in AM 234, while AM 221 has insular v with a dot, <í>. Scribe A in AM 234 writes <v> for u-sound, while scribe B and AM 221 sometimes have <u>. There are two types of <n> in AM 221 and in scribe B in AM 234, but only one in scribe A. There are three types of <r> in both manuscripts, and two types of <s>. In AM 221, we find older graphs for vowels. AM 221 uses the older abbreviation in the form of a zigzag sign, the sign <ɔ>, and the tironian note <7>, while in the latter case the younger <z> can be seen in AM 234. Superscribed <a> is used in AM 221 for /va/, while AM 234 has a wider use of the signs <w>, <w>, or <π> for i.a. /va/.The orthographical comparison between AM 234 and AM 221 discloses a number of non-controversial differences, arising from changed orthographical customs and/or changed pronounciation, but also phenomena that are more difficult to explain. As changes of orthographical habits can be counted different marking of long vowels, the writing of weakly stressed vowels as <e> and <o> (AM 221), different spelling of the privative prefix, the use of <N> (AM 221, scribe B) and of <gh> (scribe B). Change in pronouciation is shown in cases that reveal transition from /va:/ to /vo:/ (scribe B), the writing of <ei> before /ng/ (AM 234), the existence of svarabhakti vowel (scribe B), and palatalization of velars before original <æ> and <œ> (AM 234). More difficult to explain is the fact that AM 221 makes difference between earlier <æ:> and <œ:> and shows signs of an earlier differentiation between /ɔ/and /ø/. The absence of u-mutation in three syllable words in AM 221 is controversial as regards the provenance of this manuscript. Scribe B in AM 234 has innovations like <gh>, <g> for <k>, and svarabhakti vowel.
