Sammanfattning: This dissertation deals with the cultural representations of smoking in Swedish popular press, books of etiquette, advertisment, popular medicine publications, and the health education genre. The questions focus on how tobacco has been used to represent specific values, ideas and ideals in relation to social and cultural contexts, as well as to femininity, masculinity, social stratification, risk, and health. An overall prpose is to show how meaning has been generated around tobacco during a period in which the risk involved in smoking have come to be more clearly defined.The study is organized around five analytgical headings. Part I, Refinement, is mainly concerned with the constitution of the the cultural roles of tobacco by means of the contemporary social mobility, class structure, and the gender order in Swedish society of the 1950s. Part II, Consumtion, focuses on structural changes in the tobacco industry during the 1960s, and the risk warnings from the medical shere. Part III, Restriction, deals with how public opinion and debates, legal trials, regulations, and governmental investigations concerning advertising influenced the images of smoking in the 1970s. Part IV, Responsibility, focuses on how the term passive smoking influenced the cultural representations of tobacco in the 1980s. Part V, Split Vision, reflects the accelerating tension between the tobacco industry and the public authorities in the 1990s. as well as how the concept of moderation and ritualized smoking functioned to re-legitimize tobacco use in the popular culture.
