Det datoriserade biblioteket : Maskindrömmar på 70-talet
Sammanfattning: During the 1950s and 60s research libraries faced the problem of coping with the escalating growth of scientific publishing. During the same periodadministrative innovations were introduced in order to modernize institutions such as libraries. The most promising solution to administrative problems of organizing information was considered to be computer technology. This thesis analyses the introduction of computers into Swedish researchlibraries. The study focuses on how an application of information technology, LIBRIS (Library Information System) was developed as a cooperative effort between various actors. The interactions among actors in shaping a library information system are analyzed and critical issues are explored through a historical account of these processes. The study seeks to increase our understanding of the social shaping of a new technological system; how alternative definitions of library functions and different professional norms alter the configuration of the emerging system. A further ambition is to analyze the interplay between visions and practices in the development of technology. The LIBRIS system is presented as developing through three phases, the design phase 1970-1973, the implementation phase 1974-1980 and the "use" phase starting in 1980. The two first phases are analyzed in this thesis. The concluding chapter re-analyzes the historical material. The mainperspectives and processes in the shaping of LIBRIS are addressed. Finally the professional strategies of librarians trying to gain control over information technology are discussed.
