Detta är en avhandling från Uppsala : Teologiska institutionen

Sammanfattning: The aim of this thesis is:...to gain knowledge, from several theoretical concepts, about the music life of the Church of Sweden as it is experienced by church visitors, church musicians and choir members and from this knowledge...generate hypothesis about the music life in Church of Sweden and discuss the theoretical perspectives in which the concepts constitutes central elements.Within this aim the mechanisms which seems to imply that the music life in Church of Sweden seems relatively resistant to ongoing secularisation will be illuminated.Quantitative research methods will be used throughout in order to achieve general knowledge. The thesis is built on three empirical studies on an individual level, which were carried out in periods between 1994 and 1998 as well as an analysis of data on aggregated local level. The empirical analyses are focused upon church visitors, church musicians and choir members. A collected understanding of the three different investigations will provide a more or less comprehensive understanding of the music life of the church of Sweden. The theoretical concepts are inspired from rational choice theory and theories about the importance of generational changes for shifts in values. Through the construction of concepts the thesis throw light on the theories themselves. The analyses and discussions show:that socialisation within the church is stronger for the producers of church music than for the consumers.that church music has an ability to appeal to a variety of wishes in a variety of people, it is active in three marketplaces. that the church competence of church visitors will weaken successively and that this will have impact on the religious experience of certain church music. The understanding of church music will probably develop from a church religious to a more general religious or aesthetic.that musicians as well as choir members have shown themselves to be prepared to preserve traditional church music at the same time as they are prepared to renew church music.differing understandings of the professional roles amongst the musicians and that their taste in music varies.that the musical taste of church musicians is relatively analogous with the general population. Similarly the relationship between age to taste in music, for church musicians, seems to be in accordance with that which is the case in society as a whole.
