La subjetividad Oculta : La representación del amor en obras de sor Francisca Josefa de Castillo y Soledad Acosta de Samper
Sammanfattning: The aim of this thesis is to study the romantic discourse present in two literary genres, two authors and two time periods: the works of the Mystic Francisca Josefa de Castillo, Su Vida and Afectos Spirituales, both written during the colonial period, and the romantic novel, Dolores. Cuadros en la vida de una mujer (1867) by Soledad Acosta de Samper. One of the goals of the study has been to contemplate the interaction of these texts with other social practices and to uncover which power mechanisms social and religious acted to control what the authors expressed. The differences within the body of work have allowed this investigation of romantic discourse to be conducted from two distinct points of view, those of Mysticism and Romanticism.In order to achieve our goal, we used Michael Foucault’s discourse theories, along with genre studies, the history of ideas and two concepts from Bakhtin’s theory which have been updated by Miriam Díaz and Iris Zavala: poetics of social texts and sociotext. In this way, we were able to analyze Francisca Josefa de Castillo’s Mystic discourse from the basis of its confessional nature and as part of what Michael Foucault calls “project sex discourse”, that is, a method of interrogation and investigation which was later established in the civil and religious orders.In analyzing Dolores. Cuadros en la vida de una mujer we found the construction of the female character to be problematic and we have shown how she, throughout the novel, distances herself from the proposed ideal of the Romantic tradition using two strategies: sickness and self-exclusion from society. These methods allow her to escape from who she should be and to choose her own voice and destiny. We prove as well that it is difficult to speak of a true romantic discourse in the works of Soledad Acosta de Samper because, unlike in Francisca Josefa de Castillo’s Mystic writings, a romantic poetic language does not exist. Lastly, we developed the concept of “internalization of the male point of view” or “existence for another.” We claim that Dolores, like a Mystic character, reveal a symbolic dependence, or an “internalization of the male point of view.”
