1. Investigations of neural attractor dynamics in human visual awareness
Sammanfattning : What we see, how we see it and what emotions may arise from stimuli has long been studied by philosophers, psychologists, medical doctors and neuroscientists. This thesis work investigates a particular view on the possible dynamics, utilizing computational models of spiking neural attractor networks. LÄS MER
2. Seeing the invisible: Evolution of wing interference patterns in Hymenoptera, and their application in taxonomy
Sammanfattning : The remarkably thin transparent wing membranes in tiny wasps may appear to have a simple structural design, but hide a largely unexplored complex of micro-morphological features that serve aerodynamics and may also function in visual signaling. I found that when such small transparent wings are viewed against a dark background they display vivid structural color patterns due to thin film interference, and named them Wing Interference Patterns (WIPs). 3. Analysis of signaling pathway activity in single cells using the in situ Proximity Ligation Assay
Sammanfattning : A cell that senses signals from its environment uses proteins for signal transduction via post translational modifications (PTMs) and protein- protein interactions (PPIs) from cell membrane into the nucleus where genes controlling cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis can be turned on or off, i.e. LÄS MER
4. Studies into The Mechanisms of Neurodegeneration and Neuroprotection in Rd1 Mouse Retina
Sammanfattning : Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is a group of uncured retinal diseases with the world wide incidence of about 1/3500. In spite of the huge efforts in past years, the mechanisms underlying this type of hereditary blindness has not been elucidated and nor any effective treatment available. LÄS MER
5. Chemical circuitry in the visual system of the fruitfly, Drosophila melanogaster
Sammanfattning : Signal processing in the visual system is mediated by classic neurotransmission and neuropeptidergic modulatory pathways. In Dipteran insects, especially in the fruitfly Drosophila melanogaster, the morphology of the visual system is very well described. LÄS MER
