  1. 1. Effects of unloading on skeletal muscle mass and function in man

    Författare :Hans Berg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Atrophy; bedrest; concentric and isometric and eccentric muscle actions; disuse; electromyography; fatigue; fiber types and size; humans; inactivity; maximal voluntary force; recovery; skeletal muscle cross-sectional area; strength; suspension; tomog;

    Sammanfattning : An experimental human model of skeletal muscle unloading of one lower limb and confined bedrest were employed to quantitate the adaptive responses to 10 days, 4 or 6 wk of unloading in healthy humans on quadricep skeletal muscle mass and function. Muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) was assessed using tomographic imaging (CT, MRI). LÄS MER

  2. 2. The Unloading Modulus of Soft Soil: A Field and Laboratory Study

    Författare :Jenny Persson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; swelling; heave; Clay; case study; excavation;

    Sammanfattning : Improved infrastructure in urban areas often necessitates underground construction, where the unloading behaviour of the soil is of importance for predicting the amount of heave and how long it will take for the soil to swell. It is of particular interest to study the need for the installation of tension piles, as well as whether the tunnel will be subjected to settlement or heave in the long term. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Effects of unloading and resistance exercise on skeletal muscle function, size and composition in man

    Författare :Björn Alkner; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Atrophy; bed rest; confinement; countermeasure; electromyography; human; knee extensors; magnetic resonance imaging; microgravity; muscle function; myosin heavy chains; plantar flexors; resistance exercise; skeletal muscle; spaceflight; strength; training specificity; unloading;

    Sammanfattning : Exposure to microgravity, i.e., spaceflight, causes muscle unloading leading to muscle atrophy and dysfunction. Thus, there is a need for effective countermeasures to combat these effects. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Late Weichselian and early Holocene changes of vegetation, climate and sea level on the Skagi peninsula, northern Iceland

    Författare :Mats Rundgren; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; asthenosphere viscosity; glacial loading unloading; marine polar front migrations; sea-level change; climate change; vegetation change; Early Holocene; Late Weichselian; Iceland; Lake sediments; Skagi peninsula; Geology; physical geography; Geologi; fysisk geografi;

    Sammanfattning : Sediment sequences from five lakes on the Skagi peninsula, northern Iceland, were subjected to mineral magnetic analysis, carbon analysis, pollen analysis, plant macrofossil analysis, diatom analysis, radiocarbon dating and tephra analysis in order to make detailed reconstructions of vegetation, climate and sea level during the Late Weichselian and Early Holocene. The main purpose was to investigate if the dramatic deglacial climatic shifts recorded in proxy records from the North Atlantic region, such as ice cores, marine sediments and lake sediments, also are registered in Skagi lake sediments, which would be expected considering Iceland´s position in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, within the range of the Late Weichselian–Early Holocene migrations of the marine polar front. 5. 5. Neurally adjusted ventilatory assist : from animal studies to clinical practice

    Författare :Francesca Campoccia Jalde; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist;

    Sammanfattning : Patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) undergoing ventilator treatment may experience asynchrony with the ventilator, which has been associated with increased need of sedation, sleep disruption, prolonged mechanical ventilation and unsuccessful weaning from the ventilator. The search for new strategies to improve patient-ventilator interaction is ongoing. LÄS MER
