1. Neuroblastoma Cell Differentiation: The Role of Neurotrophin Receptor Signaling and N-myc Expression
Sammanfattning : Neuroblastoma is a tumor of sympathetic nervous system derivation, mostly afflicting young children. This thesis is focused on a group of receptor proteins for neurotrophic factors, the Trk family, and on N-Myc, a transcription factor, all important in the formation of the sympathetic nervous system as well as in determining neuroblastoma patient outcome. 2. Mechanisms of traumatic brain injury in the rat : Morphological consequences and neurotrophic responses
Sammanfattning : Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of death and disability in the Western world. especially in young people. Understanding the pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury is the basis for further development of better therapeutic strategies for such patients. LÄS MER
3. Factors influencing the turnover of olfactory receptor neurons
Sammanfattning : The olfactory system has a striking capacity for neuronal plasticity throughout life and the olfactory epithelium is able to generate both neuronal and non-neuronal cells in the normal adult animal as well as after experimental injury. In contrast to primary sensory neurons, olfactory axons are able to cross the border between the PNS and CNS in the olfactory bulb after transection in the adult animal. LÄS MER
4. Inhibition in cognition : neurophysiology and connectivity of gabaergic interneurons in the prefrontal cortex
Sammanfattning : The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is a cortical region involved in higher-order cognitive functions, it is widely connected to the rest of the neocortex and is involved in tasks that require temporal integration of information. The local PFC circuit contains excitatory pyramidal neurons and inhibitory interneurons, and the interplay between these is essential for computations in the PFC. LÄS MER
5. Regulation of neurotrophins and their receptors : molecular aspects and functional implications
Sammanfattning : The aim of this work was to study the regulation of neurotrophins and their receptors in a functional aspect. The studies included analysis of neuronal and glial neurotrophin gene expression, that was investigated by using molecular biological techniques. LÄS MER
