1. Thoughts in Motion : The Role of Long-Term L1 and Short-Term L2 Experience when Talking and Thinking of Caused Motion
Sammanfattning : This thesis is about whether language affects thinking. It deals with the linguistic relativity hypothesis, which proposes that the language we speak influences the way we think. This hypothesis is investigated in the domain of caused motion (e.g. LÄS MER
2. Multidimensional MRI of Cardiac Motion : Acquisition, Reconstruction and Visualization
Sammanfattning : Methods for measuring deformation and motion of the human heart in-vivo are crucial in the assessment of cardiac function. Applications ranging from basic physiological research, through early detection of disease to follow-up studies, all benefit from improved methods of measuring the dynamics of the heart. LÄS MER
3. Time-Lapse Microscopy Imaging and Image Analysis for Cell Migration Studies
Sammanfattning : This thesis considers a complete automatic system for in-vitro cell imaging and migration image analysis. The development of such can be divided into three main problems:The first considered problem concerns how to build a robust time-lapse sequence acquisition system, for imaging adult hippocampal cells in bright-field microscopy. 4. Expresiones de movimiento en español como segunda lengua y como lengua heredada : Conceptualización y entrega del Camino, la Manera y la Base
Sammanfattning : The current thesis is based on four individual studies which aim to account for the expression of motion events (ME) in Spanish and Swedish as first languages (L1), in Swedish as a second language (L2), and in Spanish as a heritage language (SHL). The data, resulting from audio-recordings of different sorts of stimuli, have been analyzed with special focus on (1) the most common structures used for referring to various types of ME, (2) the types and amount of information provided by the participants, in particular as regards the semantic components Path, Manner and Ground, and (3) grammatical aspect and types of syntactic structures resorted to, including the correlation between the two latter factors and speakers’ discursive preferences. 5. Hand grip strength and postural control among individuals with and without Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease : Epidemiological and motion laboratory studies
Sammanfattning : BackgroundChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is estimated to affect approximately 8%–10% of all adults. The disease is considered to be a heterogenic syndrome with systemic effects, in which comorbidities including cardiovascular diseases, muscle dysfunction and fatigue are common. LÄS MER
