1. Porous Polymeric Monoliths by Less Common Pathways : Preparation and Characterization
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on my endeavors to prepare new porous polymeric monoliths that are viable to use as supports in flow-through processes. Polymer monoliths of various porous properties and different chemical properties have been prepared utilizing the thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) phenomenon and step-growth polymerization reactions. 2. Poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) from a moderate halophile: production and modification for new applications
Sammanfattning : Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a homopolymer belonging to the family of biopolyesters, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) produced by different bacteria and archaea as intracellular granules often under conditions of metabolic stress due to a limited supply of essential nutrients. The properties of the PHAs are similar to those of polyethylene and polypropylene and can hence replace these fossil based polymers in a large variety of applications. LÄS MER
3. Structural Lithium Ion Battery Electrolytes
Sammanfattning : A major challenge in the electrification of vehicles in the transport industry is that batteries are heavy, which reduces their effectiveness in mobile applications. A solution to this is structural batteries, which are batteries that can carry mechanical load while simultaneously storing energy. LÄS MER
4. Structure formation, phase transitions and drag interactions in multicomponent superconductors and superfluids
Sammanfattning : Superconductivity and superfluidity are some of the most funda-mental and important phenomena of modern physics. However, muchtheoretical work for such systems so far has been restricted to the one-component case. LÄS MER
5. Halomonas species as a source of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate). Preparation of hydrophilic macroporous polymer scaffolds
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents studies on moderately halophilic bacteria belonging to the family Halomonadaceae that accumulate polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) in high amounts when grown under conditions of nitrogen limitation. PHB is the simplest homopolymer belonging to the class of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), the biopolyesters that can biodegraded in the environment to carbon dioxide and water and are hence attractive substitutes for fossil-derived plastics.
