  1. 1. Cellulose derived carbon dots : From synthesis to evaluation as multifunctional building blocks in biomedical scaffolds

    Författare :Nejla Benyahia Erdal; Minna Hakkarainen; Jukka Seppälä; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; cellulose; microwave; carbon dots; polycaprolactone; scaffold; mineralization; drug loading; cellulosa; mikrovågor; kolnanopartiklar; polykaprolakton; stödmatris för vävnadsregenerering; mineralisering; läkemedelsbärare; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Sammanfattning : The implementation of biobased and biodegradable polymeric materials in biomedical applications is often coupled with issues related to their insufficient mechanical properties or limited bioactivity. In this thesis, a perspective on valorization of biomass is presented, demonstrating the transformation of cellulose into biobased carbon nanomaterials with the potential to serve as multifunctional property enhancers in polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffold materials for tissue engineering. 2. 2. Ocean chemistry and the evolution of multicellularity

    Författare :Emma U. Hammarlund; Stefan Bengtson; Donald Canfield; Nils Holm; Graham Budd; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geochemistry; biology; paleontology; evolution; multicellularity; geokemi; Geochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Oxygen has been assumed to be a vital trigger for the evolution of multicellular life forms on Earth, partly based on its power to promote substantial energy flux in cell respiration and partly as biosynthesis of compounds like collagen require oxygen. However, the co-evolution of large life and the Earth’s chemical environment is not well understood at present, and there is particular disagreement in the field about whether the Cambrian explosion of animal life forms was a chemical or biological event. 3. 3. The Effects of Oxygenated Fuels on DISI Engine Particle Emissions and Efficiency : Experimental investigation of the effects of oxygenated biofuels on particle emissions and engine performance

    Författare :Tara Larsson; Ulf Olofsson; Terese Løvås; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biofuels; reneawable fuels; direct-injected engines; spark-ignited engines; particle emissions; engine efficiency; engine performance; Machine Design; Maskinkonstruktion;

    Sammanfattning : The transport sector is one of the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions.Replacing fossil fuels with renewable fuels can help reduce the impact oftransportation on the climate. LÄS MER

  4. 4. SOD1 misfolding and aggregation in ALS : in the light of conformation-specific antibodies

    Författare :Manuela Lehmann; Jonathan D. Gilthorpe; Stefan L. Marklund; Thomas Brännström; Ulrika Nordström; Elizabeth Fisher; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ALS; antibodies; SOD1; disordered SOD1; patient-derived models; low oxygen tension; Immunotherapy;

    Sammanfattning : Mutations in the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene are linked to the progressive neurodegenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS-associated mutations affect the stability of the SOD1 protein and promote its unfolding. As a consequence, disordered SOD1 species can misfold and accumulate into insoluble aggregates. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Microbial Ecosystem Functions Along the Steep Oxygen Gradient of the Landsort Deep, Baltic Sea

    Författare :Petter Thureborn; Sara Sjöling; Mats Grahn; Matthias Labrenz; Södertörns högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; microbial ecology; ecosystem functions; microbial community; bacteria; archaea; metagenomics; metatranscriptomics; oxygen gradient; hypoxia; sediment; Baltic Sea; Environmental Studies; Miljövetenskapliga studier; Östersjö- och Östeuropaforskning; Baltic and East European studies;

    Sammanfattning : Through complex metabolic interactions aquatic microbial life is essential as a driver of ecosystem functions and hence a prerequisite for sustaining plant and animal life in the sea and on Earth. Despite its ecological importance, information on the complexity of microbial functions and how these are related to environmental conditions is limited. LÄS MER
