1. Health economics and its measures in rheumatoid arthritis
Sammanfattning : Objectives: To study: (I) the impact on cost-utility analyses of applying different national EuroQol 5-Dimensions (EQ-5D) preference sets; (II and III) whether, in methotrexate-refractory, early rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the addition of infliximab results in superior health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and may be considered cost-effective, as compared to adding sulfasalazine and hydroxychloroquine; (IV) how costs relate to disability (measured by the health-assessment questionnaire, HAQ), disease activity (28-joint disease activity score, DAS28) and HRQoL (EQ-5D) in RA. Methods: In the observational SSATG register, one-year quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) accumulation of two interventions was compared according to the UK, US, or Danish EQ-5D preference sets. 2. Endoscopic methods for detecting malignancy in patients with ulcerative colitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis
Sammanfattning : Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic ulcerative inflammatory bowel disease affecting the mucosa of the large intestine. UC patients have an increased risk for the development of colorectal cancer mainly associated with long duration and extensive involvement of the colitis. LÄS MER
3. Constraint-based modeling of metabolism - interpreting predictions of growth and ATP synthesis in human and yeast
Sammanfattning : Growth is the primary objective of the cell. Diseases arise when cells diverge from a healthy growth-pattern. An increased understanding of cellular growth may thus be translated into improved human health. The cell requires materials and free energy (in the form of ATP) in order to grow, metabolism supplies the cell with this. LÄS MER
4. Chronic inflammation, anti-inflammatory treatment and risk of malignant lymphomas
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the link between malignant lymphomas and chronic inflammation, in particular the associations between inflammatory activity, immune-modulatory treatment and risk of lymphoma development. To address this aim, we used Swedish population-based registers, mandatory cancer reporting and nation-wide clinical registers including the Swedish Rheumatology Register (SRQ). LÄS MER
5. Studies on the formation of leukotriene C4 and lipoxins from leukotriene A4 in human platelets
Sammanfattning : Human platelets lack 5-lipoxygenase activity, but possess enzymatic capacity to transform the unstable epoxide leukotriene (LT)A4 to the potent inflammatory agent LTC4 and lipoxins, a group of trihydroxylated tetraene-containing eicosanoids, which recently have been suggested to have an anti-inflammatory role. A novel pathway for the formation of lipoxin (LX)A4 via platelet lipoxygenation of SS,6R-diHETE and 5S,6S-diHETE, enzymatic/non-enzymatic hydrolysis products of LTA4, was discovered in human platelets.
