11. On the influence of serotonin- and sex steroid-related genetic variation on mood, anxiety, personality, autism and transsexualism
Sammanfattning : Background: The neurotransmitter serotonin has been related to mood and anxiety, and variation in genes that encode important members of the serotonergic system may hence affect mood- and anxiety-related traits. Sex steroids influence brain development, and variation in genes encoding androgen and estrogen receptors, or enzymes needed for sex steroid synthesis, may be of importance for both personality traits and risk for psychiatric disorders. 12. Gene-environment interactions between HPA axis regulatory genes and stressful life events in suicide attempts
Sammanfattning : Suicide is a leading cause of death. In the future, treatment for suicidal behavior, as well as public health prevention and/or intervention efforts, may be guided by genetic epidemiology. This research is informed by biological alterations which have been previously observed in suicidal behavior. LÄS MER
13. Depression and suicidal behavior in Uganda : validating the response inventory for stressful life events (RISLE)
Sammanfattning : Background: Depression and suicide ideation are prevalent in the general population but their recognition and detection in primary care is problematic. The present study investigated if the RISLE can be used to detect depressed and or suicidal individuals in the general population. LÄS MER
14. The interface between family structure, life events and major depression in Uganda
Sammanfattning : Background: Poor detection of depression in primary health care is universal but worse in resource-constrained societies, yet the illness must be recognized first if it is to be appropriately managed. While current debates about life events in Western societies is on their role in the gene-environment interaction to cause depression, research on the interface between life events, family structure and major depression in many developing countries is still rare. 15. Under the influence : Substance misuse from the perspective of linked lives
Sammanfattning : Health risk behaviors shape, and are shaped by, the people with whom we interact throughout our lives. The use of substances, including alcohol or narcotics, is one such behavior, yet it is often empirically examined in isolation of other people. LÄS MER
