To reduce greenhouse gas emissions from road transport, several fuels and electricity originating from renewable energy sources have been proposed, all of them in different stages of development and with various and shifting environmental impacts.    Sammanfattning : In processes of urban infrastructural reconfiguration, there is a counterproductive tension between tendencies of de-monopolisation and market liberalisation, on the one hand, and ambitions for sustainable urban development, drawing on Keynesian reformism and ecological modernisation, on the other. In this thesis, the aim is to overcome this tension and to facilitate a concrete operationalisation of the notion &'sustainable urban development' within concrete and localised processes of planning, design, decision-making and implementation.    Sammanfattning : Continuing efforts to apply, at the local level, the Agenda 21 mandate of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, in 1992, provide good illustrations of problems typical in contemporary public planning and decision-making in many European countries.
