  1. 1. Perturbance and Stimulation : using Nitrogen Addition and High-Throughput Sequencing to Study Fungal Communities in Boreal Forests

    Författare :Andreas N. Schneider; Nathaniel Street; Vaughan Hurry; Torgny Näsholm; Colin Averill; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Boreal forest; Scots pine; Norway spruce; ectomycorrhiza; saprotroph; fertilization; nitrogen; mycobiome; rhizosphere; decomposition; carbon; seedling establishment; forest management; clearcutting;

    Sammanfattning : Fungal communities are major players in globally important nutrient cycling processes, and form symbioses with most terrestrial plants. In the nitrogen (N) limited Swedish boreal forest, ectomycorrhizal (EcM) fungi colonize most roots of the economically important and stand dominating conifer species, Norway spruce (Picea abies) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), with significant implications for tree nutrition and decomposition processes. 2. 2. Cognitive effects of deep brain stimulation : focus on caudal zona incerta for essential tremor and Parkinson´s disease, and on bed nucleus of stria terminalis for obsessive compulsive disorder

    Författare :Johanna Philipson; Patric Blomstedt; Marjan Jahanshahi; Marwan Hariz; Jean-Luc Houéto; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Deep brain stimulation. Neuropsychology. Cognition. Parkinson’s disease. Essential tremor. Obsessive-compulsive disorder. Caudal zona incerta. Bed nucleus of stria terminalis. Functional MRI.; Neurology; neurologi;

    Sammanfattning : Preserved cognition is an important determinant for perceived Quality of Life (QoL) and has been found to be essential in order to translate improvements in primary symptoms following Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) into activities of daily living that drive QoL. Therefore, it is important to evaluate not only the clinical improvement, but also the cognitive impact of DBS. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Computational Models in Deep Brain Stimulation : Patient‐Specific Simulations, Tractography, and Group Analysis

    Författare :Teresa Nordin; Karin Wårdell; Simone Hemm-Ode; Johannes D. Johansson; Harith Akram; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Anisotropy; Deep brain stimulation DBS ; Finite element method FEM ; Patient‐specific simulation; Probabilistic stimulation maps PSM ; Tractography;

    Sammanfattning : Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established method for symptom relief in movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor (ET), and dystonia. The therapy is based on implanting an electrode with four contacts in the deep brain structures where it provides electrical stimulation, mainly impacting the nerve tracts. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Swallowing and deep brain stimulation : swallowing function in Parkinson's disease after subthalamic nucleus and caudal zona incerta deep brain stimulation

    Författare :Stina Sundstedt; Katarina Olofsson; Göran Laurell; Fredrik Karlsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Background Swallowing problems are common in Parkinson’s disease, and these affect morbidity and mortality largely due to aspiration-induced pneumonia. Even mild dysphagia affects patient Quality of Life. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Retinal glucose metabolism and blood flow : Effects of photic stimulation

    Författare :Lin Wang; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology and anatomy; blood flow; darkness; flicker; glucose oxidation; glycolysis; lactate; light; nitric oxide; optic nerve; retina; Fysiologi och anatomi; Physiology and pharmacology; Fysiologi och farmakologi; Physiology; fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Retinal glucose metabolism was investigated under different light conditions in cats,pigs and rabbits. Glycolysis and glucose oxidation in the outer and inner parts of theretina were assessed by determining arteriovenous concentration differences foroxygen, glucose and lactate, as well as local blood flow.
