1. Endoplasmic reticulum function in dendrites and dendritic spines of hippocampal neurons
Sammanfattning : In the hippocampus, dendritic spines are compartmentalized postsynaptic micro-domains in the excitatory synapse. Subsets of bigger and mushroom-shaped hippocampal dendritic spines contain tubules and cisterns of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) that are connected to the soma and dendrites of the neuron. LÄS MER
2. Development and three-dimensional histology of vertebrate dermal fin spines
Sammanfattning : Jawed vertebrates (gnathostomes) consist of two clades with living representatives, the chondricthyans (cartilaginous fish including sharks, rays, and chimaeras) and the osteichthyans (bony fish and tetrapods), and two fossil groups, the "placoderms" and "acanthodians". These extinct forms were thought to be monophyletic, but are now considered to be paraphyletic partly due to the discovery of early chondrichthyans and osteichthyans with characters that had been previously used to define them. 3. Death, survival, and morphological development of hippocampal granule cells born in an inflammatory environment
Sammanfattning : The brain continues to form new neurons throughout life. This process of adult neurogenesis has been thoroughly documented in several species including birds, rodents and humans. LÄS MER
4. Plasticity in the dopamine 1 receptor system : behavior and cell biological studies
Sammanfattning : Dopamine is a key neurotransmitter in the brain, and has an important modulatory role in the control of motor activity and cognitive processes. Dysfunctions of the dopamine system have been implicated in several neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. LÄS MER
5. Mathematical Models in Cellular Biophysics
Sammanfattning : Cellular biophysics deals with, among other things, transport processes within cells. This thesis presents two studies where mathematical models have been used to explain how two of these processes occur. Cellular membranes separate cells from their exterior environment and also divide a cell into several subcellular regions. LÄS MER
