  1. 1. Cursed complexity. Computational properties of subcortical neuronal microcircuitry in sensorimotor control

    Författare :Anton Spanne; Hjärnans sensorimotoriska funktioner; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; spike firing statistics; spontaneous activity; sensorimotor control; tactile processing; cuneate nucleus; sparse coding; spinal border cells; cerebellum;

    Sammanfattning : One of the big obstacles for understanding the nervous system is its inherent complexity. It poses problems when interpreting both experimental and theoretical studies since we are currently forced to consider only reduced variants of the actual circuitry of the brain. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Human spinal cord transplantation : experimental and clinical application

    Författare :Elisabet Åkesson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The main objectives of this Thesis was to further characterize the in situ human first trimester spinal cord tissue and to evaluate the survival, integration and possible neurological effects of solid human embryonic spinal cord grafts transplanted to cavities in the spinal cord of rat and man. Human-specific neurofilament and Thy-1 positive fibers were observed already at 5 weeks of gestation in the in situ human spinal cord, the earliest stage at which donor tissue was used for intraspinal transplantation. 3. 3. On traumatic lesion to the spinal cord and dorsal spinal roots : factors influencing axonal regrowth across the border between the central and peripheral nervous system in the rat and man

    Författare :Tomas Lindholm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; rat; man; axotomy; regeneration; motoneuron; ; CNS; PNS; tenascin; macrophages; BBB; scar; neuregulin; ErbB3 4; semaphorin; neuropilin; VEGF; olfactory system; DRG; DRT; SNT; SNC.;

    Sammanfattning : Nerve cells are depending on their environment. Glial cells, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system (CNS) make up a totally different milieu and characteristics than the distinguishing qualities of the peripheral nervous system (PNS), where the nerve cells are surrounded by Schwann cells. 4. 4. Cell damage and tissue repair in the central nervous system : electron mi[c]roscopy study of neuronal death and cell replacement

    Författare :Benita Andersson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Ischemia; cell death; repair; stem cells; neurogenesis; EM; MRI;

    Sammanfattning : The central nervous system is vulnerable to various insults and particularly to ischemia. To mimic ischemia, a photochemical or compression lesion was induced in the right sensory motor cortex of rat brains. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Early Rostrocaudal Patterning of the CNS

    Författare :Ulrika Nordström; Thomas Edlund; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; CNS development; neural patterning; neural specification; Wnt; FGF; RA; Isthmic organizer; motor neurons; rostrocaudal patterning.; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The transformation of an initially uniform population of epiblast cells into an intricately complex central nervous system (CNS) is one of the most fascinating processes during embryonic development. Presumptive neural cells are initially specified as cells of forebrain character. LÄS MER
