1. Environmental history in southern Mozambique : Reconstruction of flooding events, hydroclimate and sea-level dynamics since mid-Holocene
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis has been to reconstruct paleoenvironment, paleohydrology and paleoclimate in coastal southern Mozambique, with emphasis on tracing past flooding events on the lower Limpopo River floodplain. In order to extend flood chronologies beyond periods covered by instrumental data, sediments from lakes on the floodplain were studied (Lake Lungué, Coassane Oxbow, Lake Magandane and Lake Soane). 2. Changing Landscapes : An Environmental History of Chibuene, Southern Mozambique
Sammanfattning : This thesis analyses the dynamics of environmental change and its embeddedness in the long term interactions of social history and rainfall variability through the building of an environmental history of the Chibuene locality, the coastal plain of southern Mozambique, 5 km south of the town Vilanculos, from 400 AD to present day. Land-use practices over time are discussed on the basis of vegetation and land-use history based pollen analysis, charcoal influx and diatom analysis. LÄS MER
3. METHODS FOR TRANSBOUNDARY WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT IN WATER STRESSED REGIONS – CASE STUDY: SOUTHERN AFRICA
Sammanfattning : Water resources management in water scarce regions like the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) is challenging with both large hydro-climatic-induced scarcity and the considerable inter-annual fluctuations at the centre of the allocation problem. Water must be allocated both in time and space using acceptable criteria and most importantly, all stakeholders must adhere to the decisions imposed by water sharing agreements. LÄS MER
4. ‘How good is good?’ : Studies of facility-based childbirth care in southern Mozambique, from the perspectives of women and health providers
