11. Effects of forest fire smoke and volcanism on the stratospheric aerosol
Sammanfattning : This thesis explores the stratospheric aerosol through both in-situ measurements and remote sensing. The background stratospheric aerosol is complex and is perturbed by injections of forest fire smoke particles and by particles formed from volcanic SO2. LÄS MER
12. Cardiovascular and pulmonary health effects of air pollution - long term effects in Sweden and effects of wood smoke
Sammanfattning : Exposure to air pollution is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. Main suggested mechanisms are airway and systemic inflammation, affecting hemostasis in the short term and atherosclerosis in the long term. LÄS MER
13. T cells and smoke-induced airway inflammation
Sammanfattning : Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an inflammatory disease primarily caused by longterm cigarette smoking. The disease is characterized by both tissue remodelling and an accumulation of inflammatory cells including macrophages, neutrophils and T cells, in the lung. LÄS MER
14. Receptor Upregulation and MAPK Activity in Arteries and Bronchi Following Secondhand Smoke Exposure
Sammanfattning : Cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Contractile receptor changes have been observed in several vascular diseases. The intracellular mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways are suggested to be associated with receptor upregulation. LÄS MER
15. Mineral fibers, cigarette smoke, and oxidative DNA damage : An experimental study
Sammanfattning : This study concerns the ability of mineral fibers and cigarette smoke to generate reactive oxygen metabolites and to cause damage to DNA. The generation of hydroxyl radicals (OH") was demonstrated by using the DNA base, deoxyguanosine (dG) as a trapping agent for OH" and determining its hydroxylation to 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (80HdG), and oxidative DNA damage was assessed as formation of 80HdG in isolated DNA or in DNA of human lung cells in culture.
