  1. 1. Ventilation of the Paranasal Sinuses. A study using the 133-Xenon Washout Technique

    Författare :Bo Paulsson; Lund Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; auditive system and speech; single photon emission computed tomography; paranasal sinuses; ventilation; 133-xenon; chronic sinusitis; nose-sinus model; endoscopic sinus surgery; oxymetazoline; Otorhinolaryngology; Otorinolaryngologi; audiologi; hörsel- och talorganen; audiology;

    Sammanfattning : A noninvasive 133-xenon washout technique was used to evaluate the ventilation of the paranasal sinuses in healthy subjects and in patients with sinus disease. A mixture of air and 133-xenon is insufflated into the nasal cavities and passage into the sinuses is facilitated by a pressure increase created by letting the subjects inflate a balloon. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Malignant melanoma and other malignancies of the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinuses in Sweden

    Författare :Mattias Jangard; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Malignancies emerging in the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinuses are rare and accounts for 5% of all head and neck malignancies and 0.1% of all malignancies in Sweden. The incidence of sinonasal malignancy (SNM), except sinonasal malignant melanoma (SNMM), has been reported to decrease since 1960 in Sweden. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Evaluation of medical and/or surgical treatment of anosmia/hyposmia in association with inflammatory disease of the upper airway

    Författare :Ebba Hedén Blomqvist; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Nasal polyposis; olfaction; medical surgical treatment; corticosteroids; scoring; staging; endoscopy; symptoms; anosmia; hyposmia; olfactory threshold test butanol ; computed tomography; sinuses; well-being; clinical; evaluation;

    Sammanfattning : Background: There is a lack of evidence-based, prospective studies in treatment of nasal polyposis. The correlations between symptoms, polyp scores and computed tomography (CT) scans have not been studied sufficiently. Little, if any, sense of smell is common in nasal inflammatory disease. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Nasal airway nitric oxide : methodological aspects and influence of inflammation

    Författare :Jörgen Palm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Asthma; breath test; exhaled air; rhinitis; sinuses; sinusitis; diurnal variation; gender; nasal; oral; nitric oxide; volume flow rate; AIDS; HIV; endotoxin; gut; human; shock; allergy.;

    Sammanfattning : Nitric oxide (NO) is an endogenously formed free radical gas involved in numerous biological processes. In 1991 NO was discovered to be present in exhaled air of humans. Soon after, it was reported that the largest amounts of NO were found in the upper airways, and that the levels of NO were increased in the lower airways of patients with asthma. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Humming, nitric oxide and paranasal sinus ventilation

    Författare :Mauro Maniscalco; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The paranasal sinuses are air-filled bony cavities surrounding the nose. They communicate with the nose via the sinus ostia through which fluid and gases pass in both directions. A proper ventilation is crucial for sinus integrity and blockage of the ostia is a major risk factor for development of sinusitis. LÄS MER
