  1. 1. Cerebrospinal Fluid Shunts in Children : Technical Considerations and Treatment of Certain Complications

    Författare :Kai Arnell; Tomas Wester; Jan Sjölin; Per Enblad; Hans C-son Silander; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Surgery; Hydrocephalus; papilloedema; abdominal cyst; cerebrospinal fluid shunt; shunt infection; intraventricular antibiotic instillation; intraventricular antibiotic concentrations; in-vitro testing; antisiphon device; Kirurgi;

    Sammanfattning : Ventriculo-peritoneal shunting is the most commonly used method for the treatment of paediatric hydrocephalus. Despite improved shunts and surgical techniques there are still complications. This retrospective study focuses on diagnoses and treatment of shunt malfunction and infections. Cost/benefit of using an adjustable shunt was assessed. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Pathogenesis of infections related to foreign devices within the cerebral ventricles

    Författare :Fredrik Lundberg; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bacteriology; Microbiology; CSF-shunt; complement activation; vitronectin; hydrocephalus; coagulase-negative staphylococci; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Sammanfattning : Coagulase-negative staphyloccoci (CoNS) are the most frequently isolated micro-organisms from infected cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunts and temporary ventricular drainage catheters, used in modern neurosurgery. CoNS originate from the skinflora of the patient or the surgeon and gain access to the surface of the implant at the insertion, but the infection can erupt up to a year later or more. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Binding of plasma proteins by Staphylococcus epidermidis: characterisation of protein-protein interactions

    Författare :Dai-Qing Li; Diabetes - öpatofysiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Microbiology; mice and immunisation; biomaterial-associated infections; von Willebrand factor; thrombospondin; clusterin; Staphylococcal receptins; vitronectin; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Sammanfattning : Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), in particular, Staphylococcus epidermidis, have emerged as major nosocomial pathogens associated with infections of implanted medical devices. These organisms, which are among the most prevalent bacteria of the human skin and mucous membrane microflora, gain access to the surface of the implant at the insertion. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Video assisted gastrostomy in children

    Författare :Torbjörn Backman; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Gastrostomy; Laparoscopy; VAG; Complications; VPS; Malignancy; Vomiting; Double U-stitch suture;

    Sammanfattning : Children with severe diseases can be provided nutritional support through a gastrostomy if needed. At the Department of Paediatric Surgery in Lund we have used the Video Assisted Gastrostomy (VAG) procedure since 1994 when establishing gastrostomies. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Microbial ecology in deep granitic groundwater - activity and impact of viruses

    Författare :Hallgerd Eydal; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :ATP; Desulfovibrio; groundwater; bacteriophage; Podoviridae; sulphate-reducing bacteria; viral ecology;

    Sammanfattning : The deep subsurface environments in granitic rock can be studied and sampled at the Äspö hard rock laboratory (HRL) close to Oskarshamn in Sweden. Here, the groundwater is anaerobic and total counts give numbers of 104 to 106 cells mL-1. However, these measurements do not reveal if the cells are active and alive. LÄS MER
