  1. 1. Seed mobility and connectivity in changing rural landscapes

    Författare :Alistair G. Auffret; Sara Cousins; Robin Pakeman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biodiversity; Conservation; Functional connectivity; Historical ecology; Human-mediated dispersal; Invasive species; Landscape Ecology; Long-distance dispersal; Restoration; Seed bank; Seed dispersal; Seed rain; Structural connectivity; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Sammanfattning : The success or failure of many organisms to respond to the challenges of habitat destruction and a warming climate lies in the ability of plant species to disperse between isolated habitats or to migrate to new ranges. European semi-natural grasslands represent one of the world's most species-rich habitats at small scales, but agricultural intensification during the 20th century has meant that many plant species are left only on small fragments of former habitat. 2. 2. Long-term studies of succession : Colonisation and seed banks

    Författare :Ulf Grandin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Ellenberg indicator values; genetic variation; long-term study; Lythrum salicaria; Moehringia trinervia; primary succession; seed bank; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Sammanfattning : Using data from long-term studies of the vegetation in two areas under primary succession, patterns of colonisation and the accumulated seed bank during plant succession were studied.At century-old small islands in Lake Hjälmaren, Sweden, the genetic structure of differently old populations of Moehringia trinervia and Lythrum salicaria was studied, using allozyme variation for M. 3. 3. Plant community assembly in grazed grasslands

    Sammanfattning : Species assembly into local communities from the surrounding region can be caused either by species failure to reach the site (i.e. seed limitation) or to establish (i.e. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Selection during Early Life Stages and Local Adaptation in Arabidopsis thaliana

    Författare :Froukje M. Postma; Jon Ågren; Kathleen Donohue; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Dormancy cycling; Germination timing; Maternal effects; Natural variation; QTL mapping; Seed bank; Seed dormancy; Structural Equation Modeling; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik;

    Sammanfattning : Organisms are often adapted to their local environment, but the role of early life stages in adaptive differentiation among populations remains poorly known. The aim of my thesis was to investigate the contribution of early life stages to the magnitude and genetic basis of local adaptation, and to identify the underlying adaptive traits. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Ecology and evolution of local adaptation in Arabidopsis thaliana

    Författare :Giulia Zacchello; Jon Ågren; Xavier Picó; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arabidopsis thaliana; germination time; natural populations; Near isogenic lines; reciprocal transplants; seed bank; seed dormancy; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I investigate the ecological genetics of local adaptation in the annual herb Arabidopsis thaliana with the aim to identify key traits, agents of selection, and genomic regions contributing to adaptive differentiation. The thesis focuses on adaptive differentiation in timing of germination and seed dormancy between populations located close to the southern and northern range margins in Europe. LÄS MER
