  1. 1. Settling the Scales : Justice in International Environmental Negotiations and Beyond

    Författare :Annkatrin Tritschoks; Ashok Swain; Kristine Höglund; Isak Svensson; Frank Dieter Grundig; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; chair; climate change; conflict resolution; Cyprus; environmental negotiations; international negotiations; justice; protracted social conflict; UNFCCC; Peace and Conflict Research; Freds- och konfliktforskning;

    Sammanfattning : Parties to international negotiations typically invoke conflicting notions of justice. If these can be reconciled, this has positive effects on the negotiation process and outcome. If conflicts over justice persist, negotiations can stall or result in suboptimal outcomes. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Paths to improving atmospheric models across scales : The importance of the unresolved scales

    Författare :Kerstin Hartung; Gunilla Svensson; Rodrigo Caballero; Olof Runborg; Heikki Järvinen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; global climate models; atmospheric blocking; topographic forcing; physical parametrizations; single-column model; atmosphere-ocean single-column model; air-sea interaction; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Sammanfattning : Correct representation of physical processes, the parametrizations, and their interaction with the resolved circulation is crucial for the performance of numerical models. Here, focus is put on understanding model biases and developing tools to alleviate existing biases. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Predictive Modelling of Aquatic Ecosystems at Different Scales using Mass Balances and GIS

    Författare :Andreas Gyllenhammar; Lars Håkanson; Lars Brydsten; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; mass balance model; dynamic model; scales; marine fish farms; rainbow trout; nutrients; suspended particulate matter; phosphorus; nitrogen; GIS; basin delineation; regionalisation; coastal areas; aquatic foodweb; fishing quotas; Baltic Sea; Archipelago Sea; Okavango Delta; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis presents models applicable for aquatic ecosystems. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) form an important part of the thesis. The dynamic mass balance models focus on nutrient fluxes, biotic/abiotic interactions and operate on different temporal and spatial scales (site, local, regional and international). LÄS MER

  4. 4. Three-dimensional Virtual Histology of Early Vertebrate Scales Revealed by Synchrotron X-ray Phase-contrast Microtomography

    Författare :Qingming Qu; Per Ahlberg; Henning Blom; Moya Smith; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 3D virtual paleohistology; scales; ontogeny; jawed vertebrates; phylogeny; Biology; Biologi; Earth Science with specialization in Historical Geology and Palaeontology; Geovetenskap med inriktning mot historisk geologi och paleontologi;

    Sammanfattning : Vertebrate hard tissues first appeared in the dermal skeletons of early jawless vertebrates (ostracoderms) and were further modified in the earliest jawed vertebrates. Fortunately, histological information is usually preserved in these early vertebrate fossils and has thus been studied for more than a century, done so by examining thin sections, which provide general information about the specific features of vertebrate hard tissues in their earliest forms. 5. 5. Solute Transport Across Scales : Time Series Analyses of Water Quality Responses to Quantify Retention and Attenuation Mechanisms in Watersheds

    Författare :Joakim Riml; Anders Wörman; Aaron I. Packman; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Solute transport modeling; Transient storage; Tracer test; Central temporal moments; Spectral analysis; Parameterization;

    Sammanfattning : The intra-continental movement of waterborne contaminants is governed by the distribution of solute load in the landscape along with the characteristics and distribution of the hydrological pathways that transport the solutes. An understanding of the processes affecting the transport and fate of the contaminants is crucial for assessments of solute concentrations and their environmental effect on downstream recipients.
