1. The hidden life of plants : fine root dynamics in northern ecosystems
Sammanfattning : Fine roots constitute a large part of the primary production in northern (arctic and boreal) ecosystems, and are key players in ecosystem fluxes of water, nutrients and carbon. Data on root dynamics are generally rare, especially so in northern ecosystems. LÄS MER
2. Insights into the Molecular Mechanisms of Litter Decomposition and Assimilation of Nitrogen by Ectomycorrhizal Fungi
Sammanfattning : Ectomycorrhizae is the dominant type of mycorrhiza found in association with tree roots in boreal and northern temperate forests. In this symbiosis, the fungal partner derives energy from photosynthates provided by the host trees and in return delivers soil-derived nutrients such as nitrogen (N). LÄS MER
3. Impact of tree species on carbon in forest soils
Sammanfattning : Different tree species differ in productivity, litter quality and quantity, canopy structure and nitrogen deposition. Norway spruce (Picea abies), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and birch (Betula pendula and B. pubescens) are the three dominant tree species in Sweden. LÄS MER
4. Functional ecology of ectomycorrhizal fungi : peroxidases, decomposition, spatial community patterns
Sammanfattning : Boreal forest ecosystems constitute a globally important carbon (C) sink, due to accumulation of complex organic matter, persistent to decomposition. Nitrogen (N) is immobilized in these complex compounds and, thereby, unavailable to the plant community. LÄS MER
5. Heavy metal removal by floating treatment wetlands: Plant selection
Sammanfattning : Elevated levels of heavy metals and chloride are commonly found in stormwater, as a consequence of pollution from traffic, building material and industries, and the use of salt for deicing in wintertime. Floating treatment wetlands (FTWs), consisting of vegetated rafts that can be placed in stormwater ponds, may be able to reduce heavy metal and chloride concentrations, but until this date have mainly been used for nutrient removal in warm climates.
