  1. 1. The Concepts of Health, Well-being and Welfare as Applied to Animals : A Philosophical Analysis of the Concepts with the Regard to the Differences Between Animals

    Författare :Henrik Lerner; Lennart Nordenfelt; Stefan Gunnarsson; David Fraser; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Concept; concept formation; welfare; definition; health; legislation; natural behaviour; role for animals; science of animal health and welfare; veterinary medicine; well-being; begrepp; begreppsbildning; definition; djurs roller; hälsa; lagstiftning; naturligt beteende; veterinärmedicin; välbefinnande; välfärd; Philosophy subjects; Filosofiämnen;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis is an analysis of the use and definition of the concepts health, well-being and welfare within the field called “the science of animal health and welfare”. The materials used are a literature survey of the field, qualitative interviews with Swedish veterinary surgeons and a study of the concepts in legislation concerning animals in England, Germany and Sweden. 2. 2. Beyond AMPA and NMDA: Slow synaptic mGlu/TRPC currents : Implications for dendritic integration

    Författare :Marcus Petersson; Erik Fransén; Abdel El Manira; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; transient receptor potential; TRP; metabotropic glutamate receptor; mGlu1 5; dendritic integration; synaptic activation; temporal summation; low-frequency; entorhinal cortex; mathematical model; computational neuroscience; Computer science; Datavetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : In order to understand how the brain functions, under normal as well as pathological conditions, it is important to study the mechanisms underlying information integration. Depending on the nature of an input arriving at a synapse, different strategies may be used by the neuron to integrate and respond to the input. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Modulation of Neuronal Functions : the Role of SLC10A4

    Författare :Kalicharan Patra; Klas Kullander; Håkan Aldskogius; Per Svenningsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; dopamine; acetylcholine; central nervous system; neuromuscular junctions; electrophysiology; monoamine; synaptic transmission; neuromodulation; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Mental health of a person depends on the correct functioning of the brain. The brain and the spinal cord contain many types of cells, of which one important type are called the neurons. Neurons are special in the way they connect to each other to form large networks. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Cell Replacement Therapy for Parkinson's Disease: Potential for Circuitry Repair

    Författare :Tiago Cardoso; Utvecklings- och regenerativ neurobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Rabies-based tracing; Parkinson s disease cell therapy; Cell Replacement Therapy; Human embryonic stem cells; Dopamine neuron; Synaptic integration; circuitry repair;

    Sammanfattning : The derivation of dopamine neurons from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) now offers a promising alternative to fetal tissue for cell replacement therapy (CRT) in Parkinson´s disease (PD). Using the appropriate chemical cues in vitro, hESCs can be patterned towards bona-fide ventral midbrain (VM) DA neurons that survive, reinnervate, release DA and provide functional recovery when transplanted into rodent and non-human primate models of PD. 5. 5. The rhythm of rock art animals : Picturing reindeer, elk and bear around the seasonal cycle in Stone Age Alta

    Författare :Helena Günther; Fredrik Fahlander; Ingrid Fuglestvedt; Kristin Armstrong Oma; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Rock art; Stone Age hunters; the Arctic; Alta; Northern Fennoscandia; reindeer; elk; bear; traditional contextualised knowledge; human animal relations; human environmental relations; zoo semiotics; ecological community; ethology and animal imagery; arkeologi med inriktning mot allmän arkeologi; Archaeology with General Specialisation;

    Sammanfattning : The Stone Age rock art of Fennoscandia is dominated by pictures of animals. Yet it is its role in the social and cognitive processes within human society that has been the major focus for research. In the thesis, rock art is explored in the lives of people as being part of a larger ecological community. LÄS MER
