1. Resin acids in commercial products and the work environment of Swedish wood pellets production : Analytical methodology, occurrence and exposure
Sammanfattning : The aims of the work this thesis is based upon were to develop convenient analytical procedures for determining resin acids in biological and environmental matrices, and apply them to enhance understanding of the occurrence, exposure to and uptake by exposed individuals of resin acids. Particular focus has been on the workplace environment of the Swedish wood pellets industry. LÄS MER
2. Occupational exposure during production of wood pellets in Sweden
Sammanfattning : The aims of the studies underlying this thesis were to assess workers’ air exposure to wood dust and various chemicals, and to evaluate the variability in exposure and occupational dermal exposure to resin acids during the production of wood pellets in Sweden. Personal air measurements of wood dust, monoterpenes, resin acids and nitrogen dioxide (as a marker of diesel exhaust), accompanied by area measurements of these substances, VOCs and carbon monoxide, were performed at up to ten plants. 3. Leaching of Hazardous Substances from Concrete Constituents and Painted Wood Panels
Sammanfattning : At a time of increased concern about environmental issues in the building sector, it is essential to know the environmental performance of different building materials. Knowledge of the possible release of hazardous substances in building materials is scarce, and these aspects have often been neglected in environmental assessment methods. LÄS MER
4. Site and Mechanism of Action of Resin Acids on Voltage-Gated Ion Channels
Sammanfattning : Voltage-gated ion channels are pore-forming membrane proteins that open or close their gates when the voltage across the membrane is changed. They underlie the electrical activity that enables the heart to pump blood and the brain to receive and send signals. LÄS MER
5. Molecular Mechanisms of Resin Acids and Their Derivatives on the Opening of a Potassium Channel
Sammanfattning : Voltage-gated ion channels play fundamental roles in excitable cells, such as neurons, where they enable electric signaling. Normally, this signaling is well controlled, but brain damage, alterations in the ionic composition of the extracellular solution, or dysfunctional ion channels can increase the electrical excitability thereby causing epilepsy.
