  1. 1. Gift and Exchange in the Reciprocal Regime of the Miskito on the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua, 20th Century

    Författare :Christopher Kindblad; Sociologi; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; analogic code; digital code; tragedy of the commons; egalitarian norms; entrepreneurship; symbolic transformations; long-term gift; short-term exchange; reciprocal regime; Tasbapauni; Nicaragua; Miskito; paradox; Sociology; Social and economic history; Sociologi; Ekonomisk och social historia; Miskito; Social anthropology ethnography;

    Sammanfattning : This dissertation is a historical-comparative analysis of a conflict that has developed in the economic system of the Miskito in the 20th century, concerning the use of common property resources. The study is based on empirical material collected in a Miskito/Creole village on the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua in the 1990s. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Theoretical modeling of scanning tunneling microscopy

    Författare :Alexander Gustafsson; Magnus Paulsson; Jorge Iribas Cerdá; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Scanning tunneling microscopy; Computational models; Quantum tunneling; Green s functions; Density functional theory; Condensed Matter Physics; Kondenserade materians fysik;

    Sammanfattning : The main body of this thesis describes how to calculate scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images from first-principles methods. The theory is based on localized orbital density functional theory (DFT), whose limitations for large-vacuum STM models are resolved by propagating localized-basis wave functions close to the surface into the vacuum region in real space. 3. 3. Coding and Transmission Strategies for Secrecy

    Författare :Mattias Andersson; Mikael Skoglund; Matthieu Bloch; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Electrical Engineering; Elektro- och systemteknik;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis we consider several problems relating to information theoretic security. The wiretap channel is the simplest information theoretic setting which takes security into account, and in the first chapters of the thesis we design some practical coding schemes for this channel model. 4. 4. Adjusting to the extreme : Thermal adaptation in a freshwater gastropod

    Författare :Magnus Johansson; Laurila Anssi; Robby Stoks; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Radix balthica; Lake Mývatn; geothermal springs; thermal adaptation; isolation by environment; population structure; gene flow; cogradient variation; AFLP; thermal preference; CTmax; Biologi med inriktning mot populationsbiologi; Biology with specialization in Population Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Temperature is a ubiquitous force influencing biological processes ranging from cellular responses to life span. The thermal environment for many organisms is predicted to change with globally increasing temperatures and studies conducted in natural systems incorporating various evolutionary forces, such as gene flow, is needed. 5. 5. Ecological and Evolutionary Consequences of Herbivory in the Perennial Herb Lythrum salicaria

    Författare :Lina Lehndal; Jon Ågren; Peter Hambäck; Marc Johnson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Disturbance gradient; Female reproductive success; Galerucella calmariensis; Galerucella pusilla; Herbivore removal; Latitudinal gradient; Local adaptation; Nanophyes marmoratus; Plant-herbivore interactions; Plant size; Resistance to herbivory; Tolerance to damage; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I combined field, common-garden and greenhouse experiments to examine the ecological and evolutionary consequences of plant-herbivore interactions in the perennial herb Lythrum salicaria. More specifically I examined (1) whether resistance and tolerance to damage from herbivores vary with latitude and are positively related to the intensity of herbivory in natural populations, (2) whether effects of herbivory on plant fitness vary with latitude, (3) whether populations are locally adapted and whether herbivory influences the relative fitness of populations, and (4) whether the intensity and effects of insect herbivory on reproductive output vary locally along a disturbance gradient and are associated with differences in plant resistance.
