1. Attenuation correction in pulmonary and myocardial single photon emission computed tomography
Sammanfattning : The objective was to develop and validate methods for single photon emission computed tomography, SPECT, allowing quantitative physiological and diagnostic studies of lung and heart. A method for correction of variable attenuation in SPECT, based on transmission measurements before administration of an isotope to the subject, was developed and evaluated. LÄS MER
2. Spray-Dried Powders for Inhalation : Particle Formation and Formulation Concepts
Sammanfattning : Spray drying is a method with a high potential in the preparation of protein particles suitable for pulmonary delivery. However, surface induced denaturation of bio-molecules during atomization and subsequent drying can be substantial and it is therefore important to develop new formulation concept for concurrent encapsulation and stabilization of proteins during spray drying. 3. Tissue remodelling in pulmonary fibrosis linked to 5-HT2 receptor activation
Sammanfattning : After an injury, an immediate reparative response is triggered to replace the damaged tissue, however, in fibrosis, cells remain active despite wound resolution causing a steady build-up of fibrotic tissue. In pulmonary fibrosis, there is a constant regeneration and remodelling of lung tissue where the thin architecture of alveoli become thickened, hampering efficient diffusion of oxygen, as seen in diseases like idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). 4. Topics in multifractal measures, nonparametrics and biostatistics
Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of four papers. The first two papers, which comprise the main part of the thesis, deal with an unexpected connection between kernel density estimators and dimension spectra for multifractal measures. LÄS MER
5. Pulmonary manifestations in smoking-related diseases : clinical studies with emphasis on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and rheumatoid arthritis
Sammanfattning : Smoking is a risk factor for a number of diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Cigarette smoke initiates an inflammatory response which leads to structural changes in the airways and in the lung parenchyma. LÄS MER
