1. Oxidative Damage in Fish Used as Biomarkers in Field and Laboratory Studies
Sammanfattning : Many toxic xenobiotics entering into the aquatic environment exert their effects through redox cycling. Oxidative stress, incorporating both antioxidant defences as well as oxidative damage, is a common effect in organisms exposed to xenobiotics in their environment. LÄS MER
2. Oxidative stress, antioxidative defence and outcome of gestation in experimental diabetic pregnancy
Sammanfattning : Maternal type 1 diabetes is associated with an increased risk for foetal malformations. The mechanism by which diabetes is teratogenic is not fully known. Previous studies have demonstrated that radical oxygen species can contribute to the teratogenicity of glucose and diabetes. LÄS MER
3. Protein Damage Control during Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation: Role of the Proteasome
Sammanfattning : During the lifespan of organisms ranging from yeast to humans, there is an accumulation of macromolecular damage. However, these organisms produce youthful progeny with low damage levels. This thesis focuses on how this is accomplished. LÄS MER
4. The use of protein biomarkers in ecotoxicology : Studies of oxidative and genotoxic stress in the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis)
Sammanfattning : Many environmental pollutants, heavy metals and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) among them, are toxic by oxidative stress. Oxidative stress may be defined as a state in an organism when its inherent capacity to handle oxyradicals is surpassed, and it may result in peroxidation of lipids, and damage to proteins and DNA. 5. Molecular recognition and dynamics in proteins studied by NMR
Sammanfattning : Knowledge of dynamics in protein is very important in the description of protein function and molecular recognition. The thesis investigates protein dynamics on time-scales from milli- to sub-nanosecond, with focus on the latter, using NMR spin relaxation experiments on two proteins, the 138-residue carbohydrate recognition domain of galectin-3 (Gal3C) and the 56-residue B1 domain of bacterial protein G (PGB1).
