1. Pre- and postoperative evaluation of function and activity in patients with paralytic scoliosis
Sammanfattning : This thesis evaluates surgical correction in patients with paralytic scoliosis with emphasis on function and activity. The thesis includes four studies of 100 consecutive patients preoperatively evaluated and surgically corrected between 1992 and 1996 at Linköping University Hospital. Eighteen different diagnoses were represented. LÄS MER
2. Physiotherapy interventions and outcomes following lung cancer surgery
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the effect of exercise training and inspiratory muscle training and to describe pulmonary function, respiratory muscle strength, physical performance and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) following lung cancer surgery.Study I was a randomised controlled trial including 78 patients radically operated for lung cancer. 3. Pathophysiological and Histomorphological Effects of One-Lung Ventilation in the Porcine Lung
Sammanfattning : Thoracic surgical procedures require partial or complete airway separation and the opportunity to exclude one lung from ventilation (one-lung ventilation, OLV). OLV is commonly associated with profound pathophysiological changes that may affect the postoperative outcome. LÄS MER
4. Effects of Deep Breathing Exercises after Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery
Sammanfattning : Deep breathing exercises are widely used in the postoperative care to prevent or reduce pulmonary complications, but no scientific evidence for the efficacy has been found after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. The aim of the thesis was to describe postoperative pulmonary function and to evaluate the efficacy of deep breathing exercises performed with or without a blow bottle device for positive expiratory pressure (PEP) 10 cmH2O or an inspiratory resistance-positive expiratory pressure (IR-PEP) mask with an inspiratory pressure of -5 cmH2O and an expiratory pressure of +10 to +15 cmH2O. 5. Physiotherapy and physical activity in patients undergoing cardiac or lung cancer surgery
Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. Cardiac surgery is performed to improve prognosis, relieve symptoms and increase functional capacity in patients with cardiac disease. Postoperative pulmonary complications are common after cardiac surgery and a reduced lung function can persist a long time after surgery. LÄS MER
