  1. 1. Effect of Dietary Antioxidants on Oxidative Stress, Inflammation and Metabolic Factors : Studies in Subjects with Overweight and with Type 2 Diabetes

    Författare :Elisabet Rytter; Samar Basu; Bengt Vessby; Anders Sjödin; Helmut Sies; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Antioxidants; supplementation; fruit and vegetables; oxidative stress; isoprostanes; lipid peroxidation; oxidative damage to DNA; glycaemic control; inflammation; overweight; type 2 diabetes; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Nutrition; Nutrition;

    Sammanfattning : Observational studies have indicated that fruit and vegetables, and dietary antioxidants may play an important role in reducing the risk of chronic diseases, potentially by affecting pathogenic mechanisms such as oxidative stress and inflammation. Clinical trials investigating the effects of supplementation with single or a few antioxidants in high doses have, however, shown inconsistent results and thus have not been able to support the observational findings. 2. 2. Effects of Antioxidants and Pro-oxidants on Oxidative Stress and DNA Damage using the Comet Assay : Studies on Blood Cells from Type 2 Diabetes Subjects and Mouse Lymphoma Cells

    Författare :Rikard Åsgård; Björn Hellman; Leif Busk; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; metabolic syndrome; fruit and vegetable intake; plasma antioxidants; beta-carotene; alpha-tocopherol; inflammation; oxidative DNA damage; lipid peroxidation; mouse lymphoma assay; ROS; nucleotide pool; viability; DNA dye; Toxicology; Toxikologi;

    Sammanfattning : Diet and oral supplements comprise two distinct sources of antioxidants known to prevent oxidative stress. Beneficial effects from antioxidants have been seen for patients at risk for type 2 diabetes.The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the positive effects of antioxidants against oxidative stress and DNA damage in type 2 diabetes subjects. 3. 3. Influence of Herring (Clupea harengus) Intake on Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Disease

    Författare :Helen Lindqvist; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Herring; cardiovascular disease; metabolic syndrome; overweight; intima media thickness; lipoproteins; n-3 fatty acids; antioxidants; fish;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis describes four studies that investigated whether or not herring (Clupea harengus) intake decreases cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. It has previously been shown that fatty fish and fish oil intake decreases the risk of atherosclerosis and CVD. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Effects of Antioxidant and Lipid Lowering Treatment on Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Disease : With special reference to Mixed Tocopherols and Stable Fish Oil

    Författare :Meilin Liu; Afaf Kamal-Eldin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; Cardiovascular disease; Antioxidants; Tocopherols; Endothelial constitutive nitric oxide synthase; Superoxide dismutase; Protein kinase C; Fish oils; Fatty acids; Simvastatin; Lipoprotein; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin; rättsmedicin; Forensic Medicine;

    Sammanfattning : Vitamin E in food, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and lipid lowering treatment with statins have been found to decrease the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cardiac death. However, clinical trials revealed no beneficial effect of intake of alpha-tocopherol alone. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Bioactive Proteins in Bovine Milk - Studies on Glutathione Peroxidase, Lactoferrin and Immunoglobulins

    Författare :Helena Lindmark Månsson; Kemiska institutionen; []
