  1. 1. Periodontal implications of Salvadora persica L

    Författare :Reham A Al-Babtain; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Periodontal disease is a major public health problem throughout the world and is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults. For periodontitis to develop, specific gram-negative, anaerobic bacteria must predominate in the subgingival microflora, but simple the presence of these bacteria is insufficient to cause periodontal disease as disease progression involves a complex, sequential relationship between infection, inflammation and tissue destruction. 2. 2. Bad breath : prevalence, periodontal disease, microflora and inflammatory markers

    Författare :Birgit Johansson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Foetor ex ore; bad breath; halitophobia; oral hygiene; periodontal disease; periodontal pathogens and inflammatory markers;

    Sammanfattning : Bad breath usually originates within the oral cavity and is believed to be associated with periodontal disease. The over all aim of the present thesis was to study periodontal conditions in subjects with bad breath as well as the prevalence of bad breath in subjects with periodontal disease. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Progression of periodontitis and influence of periodontal bacteria on release of inflammatory markers in Swedish adults

    Författare :Stella Airila-Månsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Periodontal diseases; questionnaires; x-rays; disease progression; periodontal pathogens; gingival crevicular fluid; inflammation mediators; matrix metalloproteinases;

    Sammanfattning : Periodontitis is a common infectious disease worldwide. An estimated 15-35% of the adult population in industrialized countries suffers from this multifactorial disease. The percentage of people affected by periodontal disease increases with age, reaching a peak at the age of 5060 years. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Complement evasion strategies of human pathogens - the evolutionary arms race

    Författare :Monika Jusko; Malmö Proteinkemi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; complement system; pathogen; periodontitis; proteases; immune escape;

    Sammanfattning : Although the complement system, a pivotal component of innate immunty, is centrally involved in host defense against pathogens, its overactivation or deregulation may excessively amplify inflammation and contribute to immunopathology. Periodontitis, an oral infection-driven chronic inflammatory disease, has been linked with complement disruption by periodontal bacteria, resulting in inflammation and pathogenesis. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Salvadora persica (MISWAK) : an effective way of killing oral pathogens

    Författare :Abier Hamed Sofrata; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Miswak; Salvadora persica; chewing stick; traditional medicine; gingivitis; periodontitis; dental plaque; plaque pH; salivary flow; acid production; microelectrodes; oral hygiene; subgingival microbiota; antibacterial agent; isothiocyanate; chromatography; Porphyromonas gingivalis; Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans;

    Sammanfattning : Mechanical removal of dental plaque is regarded as an effective means of controlling the progression of dental caries and periodontal disease. The habitual use of chewing sticks (Miswak) as an oral hygiene method is still wildly spread throughout parts of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. LÄS MER
