  1. 1. Silicon cycling in the Baltic Sea : Trends and budget of dissolved silica

    Författare :Liana Papush; Åsa Danielsson; Lars Rahm; Petra Tallberg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Dissolved silica; trends; nutrient; nutrient ratios; diatoms; Redfield; limitation; eutrophication; riverine load; budget; fluxes; accumulation; retention; optimisation; Baltic Sea; Löst kisel; trender; näringsämne; näringsämnens kvoter; kiselalger; Redfield; tillväxtbegränsning; övergödning; flodtillförsel; budget; flöden; ackumulering; retention; optimering; Östersjön; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP;

    Sammanfattning : The dissolved silicon (DSi) has a crucial role for growth of a large group of primary producers – diatoms and, hence, impact on functioning of the aquatic food web. This thesis contributes to an increased understanding of the modifications of the DSi cycling in the Baltic Sea. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Particulate phosphorus accumulation and net retention in constructed wetlands receiving agricultural runoff : Critical analysis of factors affecting retention estimates

    Författare :Karin Johannesson; Karin Tonderski; Stefan Weisner; Uno Wennergren; Ben Surridge; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phosphorus retention; constructed wetlands; agriculture; sampling strategy;

    Sammanfattning : Övergödning är ett allvarligt miljöproblem, som bland annat orsakar omfattande blomningar av alger och blågrönbakterier. I söt- och brackvatten är fosfor ofta det mest begränsande näringsämnet för dessa organismer, varför en minskning av fosfortillförseln är nödvändig för att nå förbättringar. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Long-term development, modeling and management of nutrient loading to inland and coastal waters

    Författare :Amelie Darracq; Georgia Destouni; Andrea Rinaldo; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Nutrients; catchments; environmental management; climate change; population and lifestyle development; subsurface-surface water interactions; long-term simulations; nutrient retention; modeling; hydrology; transport processes; biogeochemistry; scaling; transport and reaction rates; Physical Geography; geografi med naturgeografisk inriktning;

    Sammanfattning : Environmental and water system protection and restoration require accurate knowledge and quantification of waterborne pollutant transport, retention-release and transformation processes taking place in the subsurface, river, lake and sea water systems, and at the interfaces between these systems. This thesis investigates the importance of spatial model resolution for such quantification and the possible long-term nutrient load development under different human perturbations and nutrient source management scenarios in the Swedish Norrström drainage basin, based on simulations with the GIS-based dynamic nutrient transport-attenuation model POLFLOW. 4. 4. External Mycelia of Mycorrhizal Fungi - responses to elevated N in forest ecosystems

    Författare :Lars Ola Nilsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ericoid; arbuscular; mycorrhiza; nitrogen; deposition; fertilisation; nitrate leaching; retention; field; forest; Quercus; deciduous; Plant ecology; Växtekologi; mykologi; virologi; bakteriologi; mycology; Microbiology; External mycelia; ectomycorrhiza; Mikrobiologi; bacteriology; virology;

    Sammanfattning : Most plants live in symbiosis with mycorrhizal fungi. Mycorrhizal roots constitute the interface between the plant and the soil, and almost every fine root of forest trees in nitrogen-limited boreal and temperate forests is colonised by ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Nitrogen Removal in Created Wetlands : Considerations – Challenges – Possibilities

    Författare :Josefin E. Nilsson; Antonia Liess; Stefan Weisner; Eva Lindström; Jennifer Tank; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecosystem services; eutrophication; constructed wetlands; agricultural runoff; denitrification; wetland multifunctionality; climate change; nutrient retention; vegetation; hydrology; greenhouse gas emissions; biodiversity; Biology with specialization in Limnology; Biologi med inriktning mot limnologi;

    Sammanfattning : Created wetlands in agricultural landscapes deliver a multitude of ecosystem services, one of which is the removal of nitrogen (N) from water to reduce eutrophication. Wetland N removal, primarily through denitrification, is influenced by various factors. LÄS MER
