  1. 1. Chloride Homeostasis in Central Neurons

    Författare :Tushar Yelhekar; Staffan Johansson; Michael Druzin; Merab Kokaia; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; chloride concentration; current-voltage relation; interpolation; voltage ramp; reversal potential; [Cl–]i recovery; KCC2; extracellular matrix; GABAA receptor; chloride leak conductance; neurosteroid; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Sammanfattning : The overall aim of the present thesis is to clarify the control of intracellular chloride homeostasis in central neurons, because of the critical role of chloride ions (Cl–) for neuronal function. Normal function of the central nervous system (CNS) depends on a delicate balance between neuronal excitation and inhibition. LÄS MER

    Författare :Ellinor Holmberg; Torbjörn Bäckström; Bo Söderpalm; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; allopregnanolone; neurosteroid; GABA; GABAA receptor; food intake; weight gain; obesity; hyperphagia; diurnal rhythm; schedule feeding; high fat diet; electrophysiology; obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrics and Gynaecology;

    Sammanfattning : Background Obesity is currently one of the major causes of ill health and it is clear that overeatingis the cause of obesity. However, the actions of many endogenous factors that contribute to overeating are still not well understood. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Ovarian hormones and effects in the brain : studies of neurosteroid sensitivity, serotonin transporter and serotonin2A receptor binding in reproductive and postmenopausal women

    Författare :Anna-Carin Wihlbäck; Tord Naessén; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :estradiol; progesterone; progestin; neurosteroids; saccadic eye velocity; sedation; hormone replacement therapy HRT ; menopause; menstrual cycle; mood; serotonin; paroxetine; lysergic acid diethylamide; platelets; obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrics and Gynaecology;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Estrogen has been reported to enhance well-being and quality of life during the climacteric phase. In women with an intact uterus estrogen treatment is always combined with progestins in order to protect the endometrium from hyperplasia and malignancies. LÄS MER

  4. 4. The Effect of Steroid Hormones in the Female Brain During Different Reproductive States

    Författare :Elin Bannbers; Inger Sundström-Poromaa; Johan Wikström; Kristiina Kask; Eriksson Elias; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Premenstrual dysphoric disorder; Postpartum; Estradiol; Progesterone; Menstrual cycle; Functional magnetic resonance imaging; Response inhibition; Prepulse inhibition; Startle response; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Sammanfattning : Women are twice as likely as men to suffer from depression and anxiety disorders and have an increased risk of onset during periods associated with hormonal changes, such as the postpartum period and the menopausal transition. Furthermore, some women seem more sensitive to normal hormone fluctuations across the menstrual cycle, since approximately 3-5% suffers from premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). LÄS MER

  5. 5. Physiological Stress Reactivity in Late Pregnancy

    Författare :Charlotte Hellgren; Inger Sundström-Poromaa; Helena Åkerud; Mats Hammar; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; acoustic startle response; allopregnanolone; antenatal; anxiety; cold pressor test; cortisol; cortisol awakening response; depression; electrodermal; estradiol; hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis; postpartum; pregnancy; progesterone; skin conductance; stress; sympathetic nervous system; Medical Science; Medicinsk vetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : During pregnancy, the basal activity is increased in both of our major stress response systems: the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. At the same time, the reactivity towards stressors is reduced. These alterations sustain maternal and fetal homeostasis, and are involved in the regulation of gestational length. LÄS MER
