1. Curing Multiple Sclerosis : How to do it and how to prove it
Sammanfattning : Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a potentially curative treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS) with now more than 600 documented cases in the medical literature. Long-term remission can be achieved with this therapy, but when is it justified to claim that a patient is cured from MS? In attempt to answer this question, the outcome of the Swedish patients is described, mechanisms behind the therapeutic effect are discussed and new tools for demonstration of absence of disease have been developed. 2. Cerebrospinal fluid studies of bipolar disorder
Sammanfattning : The pathophysiology of bipolar disorder remains to be elucidated. One approach to studying brain processes is analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). LÄS MER
3. Developing brain and systemic inflammation: a "Toll-like" link with consequences
Sammanfattning : The developing brain is vulnerable to external insults, and perinatal brain injury (PBI) is a major cause of life-long neurological syndromes such as cerebral palsy. Currently, no pharmaceutical intervention is available. Hypoxia/ischemia (HI), infections and inflammation are implicated in the pathogenesis of PBI. LÄS MER
4. On Neuroimmunology and Brain Function: Experimental and Clinical Studies
Sammanfattning : The immune system has been implicated in the mechanisms underlying many psychiatric disorders. Immune mediators are expressed in the central nervous system (CNS) not only in response to harmful stimuli, but also in a constitutive manner, and serve as important plasticity factors during development. 5. Endogenous and exogenous glucocorticoid effects in a model of allergic airway inflammation
Sammanfattning : Allergic asthma and rhinitis are inflammatory diseases of the airways. Allergic asthma is characterized by eosinophilic inflammation, reversible bronchoconstriction and airway hyperresponsiveness, whereas patients with rhinitis suffer from nasal inflammation, leading to rhinorrhea and nasal congestion.
