1. Neural and behavioral plasticity in olfactory sensory deprivation
Sammanfattning : The human brain has a remarkable ability to reorganize as a consequence of altered demands. This ability is particularly noticeable when studying the neural effects of complete sensory deprivation. LÄS MER
2. Brain morphology and behaviour in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata) : Effects of plasticity and mosaic brain evolution
Sammanfattning : Understanding how brains have evolved and subsequently culminated in the huge variation in brain morphology among contemporary vertebrate species has fascinated researchers for many decades. It has been recognized that brain morphology is both genetically and environmentally determined. LÄS MER
3. Sequence learning in the Bayesian Confidence Propagation Neural Network
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines sequence learning in the Bayesian Confidence PropagationNeural Network (BCPNN). The methodology utilized throughout this work is com-putational and analytical in nature and the contributions here presented can beunderstood along the following four major themes: 1) this work starts by revisitingthe properties of the BCPNN as an attractor neural network and then provides anovel formalization of some of those properties. 4. Temporal dynamics of brain and hormone changes during parr-smolt transformation in salmon
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes a series of studies designed to elucidate brain circuitry changes during parr-smolt transformation (smoltification) in salmon. The studies revealed sequential orderly chemical and structural changes of the brain. LÄS MER
5. Neurotrophic factors and neuronal plasticity
Sammanfattning : The neurotrophic factors were originally discovered because of their ability to rescue neurons during a period of naturally occurring programmed cell death. This gave rise to the neurotrophic factor hypothesis which states that specific target-derived factors protect and support subpopulations of innervating neurons, thereby regulating the pattern and quantity of innervation properly for each target tissue.
