1. Hearing Screening of Infants and The Importance of Early Language Acquisition
Sammanfattning : This thesis explores the parental perspective on hearing-screening of children, and the importance of the time of detection of a congenital hearing impairment for the child's development. A qualitative approach based mainly on interviews was employed, and the results were analysed according to three different methods - empirical phenomenology, grounded theory, and case-study. LÄS MER
2. Children with congenital unilateral sensorineural hearing loss : etiology, newborn diagnostics, and hearing aid amplification
Sammanfattning : Congenital unilateral sensorineural hearing loss (uSNHL) comprises about 25% of the sensorineural hearing losses (SNHLs) found through newborn hearing screening (NHS) programs. Even if children with congenital uSNHL struggle in school and everyday listening situations, studies on etiology, hearing aid (HA) outcomes and intervention are few, so it is still unknown when and how intervention is optimally provided. 3. Signal processing approaches on otoacoustic emissions
Sammanfattning : The recent achievement on the measurement of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) is based on a novel technical development of digital signal processing. OAEs measured in the external ear canal are normal by-products of the active process in hearing, which was discovered by Kemp (1978). LÄS MER
4. Cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex virus infections in the fetus and newborn infant, with regard to neurodevelopmental disabilities
Sammanfattning : The congenital cytomegalovirus infection (CMV) is the most common congenital infection causing childhood morbidity. The majority (85%) of infected infants have no signs of infection in the newborn period, and when sequelae such as a hearing deficit or neurological impairment manifest themselves, the possibility of a CMV infection is easily overlooked.
