  1. 6. Wetlands as a means to reduce the environmental impact of mine drainage waters

    Författare :Åsa Sjöblom; Bert Allard; Karsten Håkansson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lakvatten; våtmarker; vattenrening; miljö; Water in nature and society; Vatten i natur och samhälle;

    Sammanfattning : In many mining regions of the world, pollution of surface water and groundwater by drainage water originating from mines aiming waste poses either a serious threat to the environment, or a severe environmental problem. During the last two and a half decades, treatment of mine drainage water in constructed and natural wetlands has emerged as an alternative to more conventional methods to handle the problem. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Alkaline by-products as amendments for remediation of historic mine sites

    Författare :Lotta Sartz; Bert Allard; Ernest Yanful; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Oxidized mine waste; lime mud; green liquor dregs; fly ash; lime kiln dust; steel slag; water works granules; Oxiderat gruvavfall; mesakalk; grönlut; flygaska; filterkalk; stålslagg; vattenverksgranuler; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; Enviromental Science; Miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Mining has been and still is an important industry in Sweden, it has strongly contributed to the standard of living we have today. Extraction of ore began in the 12th century, but did not come about frequently until the 16th century, which is often seen as the starting age for ore processing and metal extraction. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Reclamation of acid-generating waste rock by in-pit backfilling and sealing : An evaluation of the Kimheden mine site, northern Sweden

    Författare :Lucile Villain; Bernhard Dold; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Applied Geology; Tillämpad geologi;

    Sammanfattning : The notion of mine site reclamation is very recent compared to the history of mining. In thepast, mine sites were left as is following termination of the operations, but modern regulationsrequire anticipation of long-term contamination of the surrounding environment and return ofthe land to a sustainable use. 4. 9. Nitrogen-cycling tracing methods : Case studies at cold-climate mine sites in northern Sweden

    Författare :Lino Nilsson; Anders Widerlund; Andreas Bryhn; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Applied Geochemistry; Tillämpad geokemi;

    Sammanfattning : High nitrogen effluents from mine sites is an environmental issue which has received relatively little attention historically. In recent years a number of studies have showed the environmental effects of high nitrogen discharge to natural water bodies, which include local eutrophication, high risk of acute reducing conditions and changed species composition in the receiving waters. 5. 10. Role of plants in treating metal-polluted waters in wetlands

    Författare :Johanna Nyquist; Maria Greger; Hans Brix; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; treatment wetlands; stormwater; AMD; metal uptake; wetland plants; Biology; Biologi; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to evaluate the role of wetland plants in wetland treatment of metal-polluted waters. The specific aims were to investigate metal uptake in various wetland plant species; whether and how wetland plants tolerate high metal concentrations in their immediate surroundings, and how the pH and metal concentrations of polluted waters influence metal uptake in wetland plants were also investigated.
