  1. 1. Volatile organic compounds from microorganisms : identification and health effects

    Författare :Anna-Sara Claeson; Anna-Lena Sunesson; Jan-Olof Levin; Steven Nordin; Bengt Järvholm; Charles Weschler; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :microorganisms; building materials; VOCs; MVOCs; amines; LC-MS MS; exposure; perceived air quality; Occupational and Environmental Medicine; arbets- och miljömedicin;

    Sammanfattning : Damp building materials are subjected to degradation processes due to moisture and also microbial growth, with both of these giving rise to emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that may contribute to indoor air health problems. The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate emissions of reactive and non-reactive VOCs from damp building materials and from the microorganisms growing on them, and also to investigate the possible health impact of these compounds. 2. 2. Microorganisms in the atmosphere

    Författare :Camilla Fahlgren; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : Bacteria are present everywhere around us; in water, soil, food, on our skin, and in the air we breathe, mainly as parts of aerosols (i.e. minute air-suspended particles). Aerosols are mainly composed of sea salt, dust, sulphates and soot but some also contain bacteria, virus, pollen, plant debris and organic matter (i. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Metal accumulation by microorganisms : Characteristics and implications for soil systems

    Författare :Maria Ledin; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AREAS; TVÄRVETENSKAPLIGA FORSKNINGSOMRÅDEN;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential role of microbial accumulation in the mobility of metals in soil systems. As a first approach, the metal-accumulating properties of three bacterial species were studied to determine to what extent and under what conditions the accumulation occurred. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Biotic and abiotic stress in microorganisms and plants: Some Mechanisms of Stress and Programmed Cell Death. Genetic Engineering Approaches Towards Improved Stress Tolerance

    Författare :Per-Johan Meijer; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biotic stress; plants; microorganisms; stress tolerance; antifreeze protein; proline; programmed cell death; systemic aquired resistance; Biochemistry; metabolism; Biokemi; Bioteknik; Biotechnology; abiotic stress;

    Sammanfattning : Various forms of stress, such as biotic and abiotic stress, were studied in microorganisms and plants to learn more about the underlying mechanisms of such stress and potential genetic engineering strategies towards stress tolerance. An antifreeze protein from winter flounder, expressed in E. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Pelagic microorganisms in the northern Baltic Sea : Ecology, diversity and food web dynamics

    Författare :Johnny Berglund; Agneta Andersson; Ramon Massana; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; resource limitation; predation limitation; microbial food web; heterotrophic microorganisms; nanoflagellates; ciliates; protists; resource heterogeneity; chrysomonads; chrysophytes; group-specific PCR-DGGE primers; Baltic Sea; Marine ecology; Marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Heterotrophic microorganisms are important for the flow of carbon and nutrients in the sea. Bacteria, nanoflagellates and ciliates are relevant components of the pelagic food web. In order to be able to predict the outcome of e.g. LÄS MER
